President Trump announced in a tweet Monday (April 20) that he would sign an executive order to suspend immigration because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!” he tweeted.
On Tuesday morning (April 21), administration officials scrambled to finalize the executive order, which they hoped to have completed within the next few days, according to multiple media outlets.
The order is expected to temporarily halt the issuance of new green cards and work visas — which had already been in place because of the pandemic. The measures look to mitigate some of the unemployment concerns related to the pandemic, an administration official told CNN.
Other aspects of the order remain unclear, including what other elements of immigration, such as family migrations and potential exemptions, might be included. Still, the order is expected to include some exemptions for farm workers and health care providers.
“President Trump is committed to protecting the health and economic well-being of American citizens as we face unprecedented times,” said Kayleigh McEnany, White House press secretary, in a statement Tuesday.
McEnany did not provide details about any health benefits of the executive order. Instead, she emphasized employment implications.
“As President Trump has said, ‘Decades of record immigration have produced lower wages and higher unemployment for our citizens, especially for African American and Latino workers.’ At a time when Americans are looking to get back to work, action is necessary,” she said.
Because of the pandemic, immigration to the United States has been largely cut off. The Department of State has suspended all visa processing, including immigrant visas. In addition, refugee settlement has been put on hold and citizenship ceremonies are not happening.
