On July 8, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, nicknamed “AMLO,” visited U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, D.C.
To get a sense of how the visit affected the Latin community, Dos Mundos asked some of its readers for their views on the trip. Here are their answers:
“AMLO has said many times that the best foreign policy is the domestic policy. Suddenly, he forgot his busy agenda and … (made) his first trip to (the) USA. Of course, the topic was the TMEC (Tratado entre Mexico, Estados Unidos y Canada in Spanish). Nothing else? Really? Of course, it was an official procedure and he must do that visit. Part of the international protocol.
“To me, it is curious that he decided to make his first visit to Trump and snubbed the G20. It seems that the TMEC is more important for Mexico, as well the USA elections. The absurd thing is that he says something and ends up doing the opposite. I really hope that the private meeting that he had with Trump was a triumph for Mexico.”

“AMLO’s visit to the United States happened … (at) the right time. Various aspects are combined.
“The first: In times of crisis, the new TMEC is set.
“Second: It is a sign to Trump that there are wounds that have not healed. However, it is also clear that the two countries need each other.
“Third: Being in Washington, as a guest, Mexico recognized and thanked the help of the Trump administration, specifically in matters of health and energy.
“Fourth: The closing speech was delightful for everyone. I could listen to it a thousand times and a thousand … times I … (would) get chills. That closing speech will remain in history.”

“The visit seemed good to me. It is the right way to start the TMEC treaty – with cordiality. The treaty is really necessary to reactivate the economy, and that is why AMLO traveled to the United States with several entrepreneurs from Mexico. They are (the ones) who handle the largest private investments in the entire country – and without their investment, the economy cannot be reactivated quickly. However, one important thing to mention is that I didn’t like the ‘recognition’ that AMLO gave to President Trump.”

“The visit of our president was very positive for our country because of the start of the TMEC. In addition, I think the visit will be beneficial because there will be more cooperation and respect between both countries. AMLO defended Mexican people who live in the U.S.
“The businessmen who accompanied the president arrived … (back in) Mexico satisfied with the achievements that they negotiated with their counterparts in the U.S. I think we must highlight the respectful and diplomatic behavior that AMLO and President (Trump) had during their meeting.”

Street Talk: La visita de AMLO a la Casa Blanca
El 8 de julio, el presidente mexicano Andrés Manuel López Obrador, apodado “AMLO”, visitó al presidente estadounidense Donald Trump en la Casas Blanca en Washington, D.C.
Para tener una idea de cómo afectó la visita a la comunidad latina, Dos Mundos pidió a algunos de sus lectores sus opiniones sobre el viaje. Aquí están sus respuestas:
“AMLO ha dicho muchas veces que la mejor política exterior es la política interna. De pronto, olvidó su agenda ocupada e … (hizo) su primer viaje a Estados Unidos. Claro, el tema era el TMEC (Tratado entre México, Estados Unidos y Canadá). ¿Nada más? ¿En serio? Claro, era un procedimiento oficial y debe hacer esa visita. Parte del protocolo internacional.
Para mí es curioso que decidiera hacer su primera visita a Trump y no asistiera al G-20. Parece que el TMEX es más importante para México, igual que las elecciones estadounidenses. Lo absurdo es que dice algo y termina haciendo lo contrario. Realmente espero que la reunión privada que tuvo con Trump sea un triunfo para México”.

“La visita de AMLO a Estados Unidos ocurrió en el momento adecuado. Se combinaron varios factores.
La primera: en tiempos de crisis, se establece el nuevo TMEC.
Segundo: es una señal a Trump de que hay heridas que no han sanado. Sin embargo, también está claro que los dos países se necesitan mutuamente.
Tercero: estando en Washington, como invitado, México reconoció y agradeció la ayuda de la administración de Trump, específicamente en materia de salud y energía.
Cuarto: el discurso de clausura fue delicioso para todos. Podía escucharlo mil veces y mil … veces yo … (me daría) escalofríos. Ese discurso de clausura quedará en la historia”.

“La visita me pareció buena. Es la manera correcta de comenzar el tratado TMEC: con cordialidad. El tratado es necesario para reactivar la economía, y es la razón por la que AMLO viajó a Estados Unidos con varios empresarios de México. Ellos son los que manejan las más grandes inversiones privadas en todo el país, y sin sus inversiones, la economía no se puede reactivar rápidamente. Sin embargo, algo importante que mencionar es que no me gustó el “reconocimiento” que AMLO le dio al presidente Trump”.

“La visita de nuestro Presidente fue muy positiva para nuestro país por el inicio del TMEC. Además, creo que la visita será beneficiosa porque habrá más cooperación y respeto entre ambos países. AMLO defendió a la gente mexicana que vive en Estados Unidos.
Los empresarios que acompañaron al Presidente volvieron a México satisfechos con los logros que negociaron con sus contrapartes estadounidenses. Creo que debemos destacar el comportamiento respetuoso y diplomático que AMLO y el presidente (Trump) tuvieron durante la reunión”.
