Longtime Kansas City, Kansas, resident Martin Cervantes and his wife, Jalynda, have founded a new group to connect those who want to help with those who need help in Wyandotte County.
Cervantes and his wife started Wyandotte Angels after realizing there was a need in the community for their organization. When the pandemic hit, they started volunteering with three programs offering food drives.
“My wife and I realized that, in between food drives, people were still hungry, so we decided to create this group,” he said.
But they not only provide food. They also provide items that include clothing and furniture.
The group does not accept any cash exchanges, only goods.
Officially created on Aug. 1, Wyandotte Angels already has 750 members, including people from out-of-county and even out-of-state.
“The drive behind us is the community; they are the ones helping us with providing the food, the clothes and everything,” Cervantes said. “We’re just like the middle person, and that’s what we want. We want the community to be a part of this, to come together as one.”
The organization has a public Facebook group, where anyone can join and reach out, whether for donating, volunteering or even requesting help.
“There’s never any questions asked; we don’t ask for ID, we don’t ask for anything,” Cervantes said. “It’s just people that need help – and that’s what we’re here for.”
To keep things transparent, Cervantes and his wife post on the Facebook group every time they make a delivery. They expect to continue growing their network to find those who are in need.
“Our community here in Kansas City, Kansas, and Wyandotte County, they have a big heart and a lot of them didn’t know how to help; and we’ve heard that, instead of donating to these big corporations, they much rather do something here locally and … know where everything is going,” Cervantes said.
Wyandotte Angels is not the only way Cervantes helps the community. For almost 14 years, he has served as a youth mentor at the juvenile detention center, helping youth transition back to their home schools.

Wyandotte Angels ayudan a los que lo necesitan en WyCo
Martin Cervantes, residente de Kansas City, Kansas, y su esposa, Jalynda, han fundado un nuevo grupo para conectar a aquellos que quieren ayudar con aquellos que necesitan ayuda en el condado de Wyandotte.
Cervantes y su esposa comenzaron Wyandotte Angels después de darse cuenta de que había una necesidad para una organización como esa en la comunidad. Cuando llegó la pandemia, comenzaron a ofrecerse como voluntarios en tres programas que ofrecían campañas de recolección de alimentos.
“Mi esposa y yo nos dimos cuenta que, entre campañas de recolección de alimentos, la gente todavía tenía hambre, así que decidimos crear este grupo”, dijo.
Pero no sólo proporcionan comida. También proporcionan artículos que incluyen ropa y muebles.
El grupo no acepta cambios en efectivo, sólo bienes.
Creado oficialmente el 1 de agosto, Wyandotte Angels ya tiene 750 miembros, incluidas personas de fuera del condado e incluso del estado.
“El motor detrás de nosotros es la comunidad; ellos son los que nos ayudan con la comida, la ropa y todo”, dijo Cervantes. “Somos como la persona del medio, y eso es lo que queremos. Queremos que la comunidad sea parte de esto, que se una como una”.
La organización tiene un grupo público de Facebook, donde cualquiera puede unirse y comunicarse, ya sea para donar, ser voluntario o incluso solicitar ayuda.
“Nunca se hacen preguntas; no pedimos identificación, no pedimos nada”, dijo Cervantes. “Sólo las personas necesitan ayuda, y para eso estamos aquí”.
Para mantener las cosas transparentes, Cervantes y su esposa publican en el grupo de Facebook cada vez que hacen una entrega. Esperan seguir aumentando su red para encontrar a los necesitados.
“Nuestra comunidad aquí en Kansas City, Kansas y el condado de Wyandotte, tienen un gran corazón y muchos de ellos no sabían cómo ayudar; y hemos escuchado que, en lugar de donar a estas grandes corporaciones, prefieren hacer algo aquí localmente y … saber a dónde va todo”, dijo Cervantes.
Wyandotte Angels no es la única forma en que Cervantes ayuda a la comunidad. Durante casi 14 años, se ha desempeñado como mentor de jóvenes en el centro de detención juvenil, ayudando a los jóvenes a regresar a sus escuelas de origen.
