New nonprofit looking for volunteers to be poll workers

By Angie Baldelomar

A new local nonprofit is recruiting volunteers to be poll workers on Election Day.
As part of its defending democracy mission, Mentoring the Force — a recently created nonprofit seeking to support veterans transitioning from active duty to civilian life — is searching for volunteers to be poll workers, according to Glenda Hernandez, board president.
“One of the things with COVID, there’s a lot of people that are afraid to be poll workers, because the majority of the poll workers in the past have been elderly people,” Hernandez said. “We’re just trying to make the process go as smooth as possible.”
Hernandez said this initiative was inspired by the work many of the veterans who were part of Mentoring the Force did in Iraq, where they helped with election processes there.
Although it is a new organization — it was created about a month ago — Hernandez hopes to grow so that it becomes “a sort of 411” for veterans.
“(We’re) trying to get grants to get more funding so that we can provide services for veterans to get them connected to other existing services,” Hernandez said. “We kind of want to be like a 411 for vets.”
So far, they have recruited more than 20 volunteers.
“Anyone can volunteer to be a poll worker,” she said.
Hernandez also reiterated that the nonprofit only wants to help and ensure that the right to vote is respected.
“We’re not (at the polls) to cause any issues or to promote a certain political party or to provide any sort of security,” she said. “We just want to encourage people to go and do their civic duty like we did this abroad for other countries.”
