By Tere Siqueira

When a Greater Kansas City area family calls the Advocates for Immigrant Rights and Reconciliation (AIRR) after a loved one is detained by immigration agents, most families have no plan in place, the organization said.

A plan should include essential, easily accessible documents, including bank accounts, powers of attorney designations, birth certificates, ID cards and an immigration attorney’s contact information or details of an ongoing case, the AIRR told Dos Mundos.

The organization also recommends that families learn their rights in detention, decide in advance what the person detained would want to pursue and save money for the possibility of being detained.

The recommendations follow a summer of intensified immigration law enforcement. KCUR-FM (89.3) reported recently that at least 30 people were arrested in the area during the men’s World Cup and that eight workers were detained July 9 at a food manufacturing warehouse in Kansas City, Missouri.

The AIRR told Dos Mundos the detention calls it responds to are concentrated in specific parts of the area. Olathe was the area’s hot spot for immigration enforcement in 2025 and remains one, the organization said. This year, it has been joined by the Northeast neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri; and the northeast side of Kansas City, Kansas, around Central Avenue, Parallel Parkway and The Legends entertainment district, the AIRR said.

Families who live in or commute through those areas should prioritize preparation, the group said, both by making a plan and by learning their rights inside and outside detention.

For families facing a current detention, the AIRR outlined three immediate steps to take. They consist of locating the person detained, contacting a trusted or community-recommended immigration attorney for a consultation, and — once the person is located — learning how to deposit money into the detainee’s commissary account so the person who’s detained can communicate with family members.

When asked what it needs most from Dos Mundos readers who want to help, the AIRR pointed not to donations, but rather, to people.

“AIRR needs impacted leaders ready to take action,” the organization stated.

The organization relies on the community to verify reports of enforcement activity and said the most common gap in those reports is location. Thus, volunteers need to know the size of an operation, what federal law enforcement agents are doing, the exact address, what the agents are wearing, the time and what equipment the agents are carrying, the organization stated. Callers often describe a general area instead.

“One time, a report said that ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) was in Overland Park, but Overland Park is huge,” the organization stated.

Families dealing with an ICE detention can reach the AIRR at (913) 229-6183. More information, including Know Your Rights sessions, is available at airrkc.org.

To volunteer with the AIRR, email rubi@airrkc.org.

Editor’s note: The AIRR requested that anyone with the organization providing comments and information for this story not be identified by name.

Parents are a child’s first and most important teachers. Research consistently shows that when families are involved in their children’s education, students are more likely to earn better grades, attend school regularly, and feel confident in the classroom.

Being an advocate doesn’t mean having all the answers—it means asking questions, staying informed, and working together with your child’s school.

Build Strong Relationships

Take time to introduce yourself to your child’s teacher, school counselor, and principal. Attend back-to-school nights, parent-teacher conferences, and school events whenever possible. Building positive relationships early makes it easier to communicate if concerns arise later in the school year.

Stay Informed

Read school newsletters, check your district’s parent portal, and pay attention to messages sent home. If English isn’t your preferred language, don’t hesitate to request information in Spanish or ask for an interpreter. Schools are committed to helping families understand important information.

Ask Questions

If your child is struggling academically, socially, or emotionally, speak with their teacher as soon as possible. No concern is too small. Asking questions and seeking clarification helps ensure your child receives the support they need.

Encourage Learning at Home

You don’t have to be an expert in every subject to support your child’s education. Reading together, talking about their school day, establishing a homework routine, and celebrating their accomplishments all contribute to academic success. Showing interest in what your child is learning sends a powerful message that education matters.

Know Your Rights

Parents have the right to be informed about their child’s academic progress, attend conferences, request language assistance, and participate in decisions affecting their child’s education. If additional academic or learning support is needed, schools can help connect families with available services and resources.

Believe in Your Voice

Every parent brings valuable experiences, culture, and perspective to the school community. Your voice matters, and your involvement can make a lasting difference in your child’s educational journey.
By staying engaged, communicating openly, and partnering with educators, Hispanic families can help create a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Together, parents and schools can ensure every child feels supported, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential.

By Tere Siqueira

Every January, many of us attempt to reinvent ourselves by making ambitious resolutions. And unfortunately, for many people, those resolutions quickly become unsustainable.

But what if the secret to real change is about doing less, not more?

Focusing only on what matters most can lead to deeper, more sustainable growth. Here are some ways to make realistic, impactful resolutions:

*Choose the most important goal to you: Narrowing your focus will increase your chances of following through. For example, instead of resolving to overhaul your entire lifestyle, commit to cooking at home three times a week to feel more in control of your health and budget.

*Keep your goal small: Big changes often fail because they demand more than your routine can handle. Start with a goal that fits your day-to-day reality, like stretching for five minutes or drinking one more glass of water.

*Set aside time each week for your goal: Even 15 to 30 minutes a week to work on your resolution can produce amazing results, if you treat that time like an appointment you can’t skip. For example, reserve Sunday evenings for journaling or planning your meals for the week, just like you would for an important meeting.

*Track your progress in simple ways: You don’t need an app or a journal to stay accountable. A sticky note, calendar or checkmark on the fridge can serve as an important cue that you’re showing up for yourself. For example, place a calendar on your wall and mark an “X” each day you drink your daily water goal. It’ll add up and keep you motivated.

*Say no without guilt: One of the hardest parts of doing less is protecting your boundaries. But remember, not every task, event or favor is essential. Learning to say no, kindly but firmly, can free up space for what matters most to you.

Commentary by Tere Siqueira

For many Hispanics living in the United States, entering a new year is a time to reflect, protect and find renewed purpose amid rising uncertainty.

With continued concerns around immigration enforcement, language access and political tensions affecting Latino communities, the arrival of 2026 offers a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with traditions in ways that promote resilience and healing.

The following practices offer meaningful ways for Latinos to enter the new year with clarity, connection and a renewed sense of purpose:

*Release what harms, preserve what empowers: Writing down painful moments, anxieties and/or injustices from the year and then destroying the paper can serve as a cleansing ritual. In its place, families can name values or commitments they choose to carry forward, such as strength, unity and courage.

*Be prepared for the start of the year: Given the instability many immigrant families face, the new year is a good time to review and organize important documents, update emergency contacts, and connect with immigrant rights groups and/or legal clinics. Creating a small emergency folder with copies of IDs, medical records and school information is a proactive way to protect loved ones.

*Set clear intentions grounded in your reality: Instead of setting general resolutions, families can write personal intentions that reflect their daily struggles and hopes, such as staying informed on civic issues or showing pride in their cultural identity. Displaying those resolutions in a visible space at home, in both English and Spanish, can serve as a daily reminder of purpose.

*Gather to share stories and strengthen community: Whether around a dinner table or in a local community space, hosting a small New Year’s Eve gathering centered on collective reflection can be healing. Such moments can include lighting candles in honor of those affected by deportation, violence or loss, and offering space to share individual and community goals for the year ahead.

*Prioritize emotional check-ins and mental health: The toll of stress and fear is often hidden. Scheduling regular emotional check-ins with yourself, family members and/or a counselor is a valuable act of care. For those more comfortable in Spanish, consider accessing bilingual mental health resources or community-based support groups that focus on wellness and connection.

Commentary by Tere Siqueira

The Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe remains relevant – and not just in Mexico, the country of its roots.

Observed on Dec. 12 (and Dec. 13, in some places), the holiday marks the appearance of the Virgin Mary in 1531 at Tepeyac Hill in present-day Mexico City to Juan Diego, an Indigenous man. According to Juan Diego, the figure spoke in Nahuatl, appeared with brown skin and wore a turquoise cloak. Over the centuries, that image became known as Our Lady of Guadalupe and has become one of the most recognized expressions of faith in Mexican life. As time passed and migration reshaped communities across continents, however, Our Lady of Guadalupe’s image began to appear in places far from her historical origins, gradually becoming a global cultural and spiritual reference.

Our Lady of Guadalupe’s connection to migrant communities has been especially meaningful, evolving into a symbol of cultural survival. For generations, her image has offered a sense of continuity to people who find themselves between spiritual, social and/or geographic worlds. Migrants have carried her with them, not just in prayer cards or candles, but also on murals, in tattoos and on altars that anchor them to their roots. Whether painted on the walls of a corner store in Kansas City, Missouri, or stitched onto a jacket in Los Angeles, she reminds people of who they are and where they come from, even when the language, customs and terrain around them feel unfamiliar.

The icon’s reach extends beyond the Americas. During the Colonial Era, trade routes linked Mexico and the Philippines, allowing religious images to circulate across the Pacific. Throughout the centuries, Filipino communities have integrated a devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe into their own practices. Churches, altars and annual festivities dedicated to her can still be found there. This transoceanic connection shows how cultural symbols adapt to new places while retaining their original significance for those who honor them.

In contemporary life, Our Lady of Guadalupe is present in forms that go beyond traditional religious expression. In addition to the aforementioned murals and tattoos, designers use her image in clothing, accessories and digital media. Community groups display her during vigils, festivals and moments of collective remembrance. These expressions highlight her evolving role as a figure associated with compassion, cultural continuity and protection. Her image resonates with people of varying backgrounds, and this broad appeal contributes to her visibility in both private and public spaces.

For many readers of Dos Mundos, Our Lady of Guadalupe’s presence is already woven into their daily experiences. She appears on neighborhood storefronts, in churches and at family celebrations, often in moments marked by reflection or gratitude. And as communities grow and shift, her meaning continues to evolve, offering a point of connection between the past and present.

Whether seen as a spiritual guide or a cultural emblem, Our Lady of Guadalupe remains relevant to those who navigate life across borders and build bridges between generations and traditions. And so does the holiday named after her.

By Angie Baldelomar

The Lopez Family Scholarship is in the middle of a fundraiser.

Under the campaign name Cambio para Cambio (Change for Change in English), the Lopez Family Scholarship is selling burritos and/or encouraging making donations to directly provide scholarship support for Greater Kansas City area Latinos going to college.

Cambio para Cambio is a campaign by the Hispanic Development Fund (HDF) that “realizes the philanthropic power of Latino students, local businesses and professional organizations,” as described on the HDF website. This means that, in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, all money donated between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15 will be matched 100% to benefit programs under the HDF.

The Lopez Family Scholarship honors Francisco “Pancho” and Guadalupe Lopez’s legacy of supporting education, according to the event website.

“For anyone that knew Pancho, food was his love language and his way to support his family, selling burritos every day to ensure he could help provide for his wife and children and support their educational journey,” the official website for the initiative states.

The burritos are being made using Pancho’s recipe. Burritos can be ordered online, and orders will be ready for pickup 4-5 p.m. on Oct. 18. Order them at https://tinyurl.com/BuyBurritos2025.

Those wishing to donate without buying burritos can do so at https://hdfkc.networkforgood.com/projects/258667-lopez-family-scholarship.

In an increasingly digital world, access to technology and reliable information sources has become essential for community participation, economic opportunity, and civic engagement. For Kansas City’s vibrant Hispanic community, organizations like Dos Mundos Bilingual Newspaper are playing a crucial role in bridging the digital divide while keeping residents informed and connected.

The Power of Bilingual News in Digital Inclusion

Dos Mundos, which has been “divulgando la cultura en dos idiomas” (spreading culture in two languages) for over four decades, represents more than just a newspaper; it’s a vital digital bridge for Kansas City’s Spanish-speaking residents. With both print and online editions, Dos Mundos ensures that important community news, resources, and opportunities reach every family, regardless of language barriers.

The newspaper’s recent coverage highlights the diverse needs of the Hispanic community, from housing developments like the Villa View Apartments opened by Guadalupe Centers Inc., to local business spotlights like Laura’s CakePop Shop, to important civic issues like the Southwest Boulevard improvements and World Cup 2026 preparations.

Breaking Down Digital Barriers

The digital divide in Kansas City’s Hispanic community is influenced by several interconnected challenges:

Language Access: Many online resources remain available only in English, making navigation difficult for Spanish-speaking residents. Bilingual platforms like Dos Mundos bridge this gap by providing news and information in both languages.

Economic Barriers: High-speed internet and updated devices can strain family budgets. However, programs like the FCC’s Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and local device donation initiatives are helping make technology more accessible.

Digital Literacy: Understanding how to navigate online platforms for education, healthcare, and employment requires training and support. Kansas City’s public libraries and community centers are stepping up with bilingual tech classes and workshops.

Community-Driven Solutions

The success of digital inclusion efforts in Kansas City stems from community-driven initiatives that understand local needs:

Educational Support

Public libraries offer computer access, free Wi-Fi, and bilingual tech classes, while organizations like Mattie Rhodes Center provide comprehensive community programs including arts education and digital literacy training.

Business Development

Hispanic entrepreneurs rely on digital platforms to grow their businesses, with bilingual newspapers featuring business headlines and opportunities. Local programs offer digital marketing workshops to help small businesses adapt to e-commerce and online advertising.

Healthcare Access

Telehealth platforms with bilingual interfaces are making healthcare more accessible, allowing families to access medical records, book appointments, and receive reminders in Spanish.

Civic Engagement Through Information

Recent coverage by Dos Mundos demonstrates how local news keeps the Hispanic community engaged in civic life. From covering local political candidates like Alma Hall seeking UG commissioner position, to reporting on community protests and public safety issues, bilingual news sources ensure that Spanish-speaking residents can participate fully in democratic processes.

The newspaper’s coverage of the “NO ICE” protest in Overland Park, stretching from 80th to 103rd on Metcalf Avenue, exemplifies how local bilingual media documents and validates community concerns while keeping residents informed about important civic actions.

Looking Forward: World Cup 2026 and Beyond

As Kansas City prepares to host World Cup 2026 matches, the city’s commitment to digital inclusion becomes even more critical. The Hispanic community’s participation in this global event as business owners, service providers, and cultural ambassadors depends on having equal access to digital resources and information.

Mario Vasquez, Kansas City’s city manager, faces the challenge of ensuring that major events like the World Cup benefit all residents. This includes making sure that digital infrastructure improvements and economic opportunities reach Hispanic families and businesses.

Resources for Digital Access

For Hispanic families seeking to bridge the digital divide in Kansas City:

Affordable Internet: Apply for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) or explore low-cost internet packages from local providers with bilingual customer service.

Digital Skills Training: Contact Kansas City Public Library or Hispanic community organizations for free computer and internet classes in Spanish.

Device Access: Look into local nonprofit device donation programs that provide refurbished laptops and tablets to families in need.

Bilingual News: Stay informed through Dos Mundos online editions and other bilingual newspapers that cover local news, business opportunities, and community resources.
