La Peste Negra llega a Estados Unidos

hand

Plague reported in Colorado,  Man dies from infection

By Chara

On Aug. 6, the Pueblo City-County (Colo.) Health Department reported an adult male had died from a disease known as the plague.
According to a press release from the government agency, the individual might have contracted the disease from fleas on a dead rodent or other animal.
“This highlights the importance … (of protecting) yourself and your pets from the exposure … (to) fleas that carry (the) plague,” Sylvia Proud, public health director of the Pueblo City-County Health Department, was quoted in a press release as saying.
Health authorities are investigating the death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been seven cases of plague in the United States. Most have been in rural areas.
It’s believed the plague is caused by Yersinia pestis, a bacterium that’s transmitted from rodent to rodent by inflected fleas. If detected in time, the plague can be cured with the right treatment.
To prevent an outbreak of the plague, people are advised to watch for possible symptoms that take place between two and six days after coming into contact with the bacterium. Symptoms include fever, weakness, chills, and swollen and painful lymph nodes.
To avoid infection with the plague, the Pueblo City-County Health Department is advising people to avoid contact with sick or dead rodents and rabbits, using insect repellent during activities in the woods, preventing pets from roaming and using proper veterinarian flea control. People with sick pets are advised to take them to a veterinarian for examination.
