Johnson County issues proclamation starting Hispanic Heritage Month

By Angie Baldelomar

On Sept. 13, the Johnson County (Kansas) Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation recognizing National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) during a board meeting at the Johnson County Administration Building in Olathe.
Connie Springfield, associate principal at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, received the proclamation and gave a brief speech on the importance of having a month that celebrates Hispanic heritage.
“It gives us an opportunity not only to feel proud of our roots, but also to share with those who are not Hispanic,” she said.
Springfield also gave some statistics about the U.S. Hispanic population. With the number expected to grow, a month like this helps foster understanding, she said.
Springfield brought 10 high school students with her. One student, Yairee Juarez, a senior and student leader at Shawnee Mission Northwest, gave a brief speech about what this month means to Hispanics.
“It means that we’re proud, that we’re different from many other cultures, but we’re also very alike,” Juarez said. “Our culture is rich and unique, and we try to embrace this as much as we can.”
Juarez also said that Hispanic people are there for one another in times of need, citing the September 2017 earthquake in Mexico and the June volcano eruption in Guatemala as examples.
“We always build each other up in moments of tragedy,” she said.
The students, along with members of the Olathe Latino Coalition, also participated in a meet-and-greet and breakfast with the Johnson County commissioners before the meeting, where they shared coffee and pan dulce.
Afterward, Springfield echoed the sentiment expressed by Juarez about how Hispanic Heritage Month brings awareness to non-Hispanics.
“When you actually bring the awareness out and you’re connecting, … seeing them as leaders, you will see a lot of similarities of where we all want to go,” she said.
