Wonderful World: Discover Kenya

By Tom Sawyer

Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about many cities of an African country, where the famous “great migration” ends. We are talking about Kenya, Africa. The Kenyan country achieved its independence from the United Kingdom in 1963 and it has almost 50 million inhabitants.
The name of the country comes from Mt. Kenya, which is the second highest in all Africa. Its capital is the city of Nairobi, which is one of the most important cities in the whole continent. The country has the biggest GDP in all eastern and center Africa.
Round-trip flights from Kansas to Kenya have an average cost of $1,100, being the cheapest those who take you to the capital Nairobi; most of them have two layovers. The best way to move places is undoubtedly using a tour previously paid, though you can also rent a car for around $100 per day. However, you need to consider that most streets are not paved and that traffic rules are not fully followed so you should drive with caution. You can also use the famous “matatus,” which are trucks adapted as minibuses that transport 15 to 22 people and that can help you move from one city to another easily or within the same city. Regarding lodging, I recommend you stay in one of the two main cities in Kenya. In Nairobi, you will find a huge variety of hotels that adapt to your budget, having 3-star hotels from $20 a night to more luxurious, 5-star hotels for $200 a night. In Mombasa, being a coastal city, prices are a bit higher but equally accessible to all with an average cost of $70 per night in 3-star hotels and $250 per night in 5-star hotels. As for food, try the Nyama Choma, a rich meat of either veal, lamb or goat seasoned and prepared as a barbecue. If you prefer water products, try the delicious freshly caught tilapias from Lake Victoria. As for dessert, try all styles of preparing bananas: pureed, fried, with honey, and even with lemon. For drinks, do not forget to try the quality of its teas and coffees, of which they are one of the main exporters of the entire continent. The average cost of a meal is $10, with dessert included.
The places you should not miss during your next visit to this beautiful African country are the following:

*Nairobi: the capital of the country and its most visited city. Here you can visit the orphanage of elephants, where they care, feed, and above all teach the little elephants that were abandoned, lost or left orphans to survive on their own so that when they are older they can be returned to their freedom in the National Park Tsavo. The best time to visit it is 10 a.m. when they are feeding the elephants so that the elephants can later bathe in mud. It is worth nothing that the entrance fees help continue this beautiful cause of keeping alive so many unique animals. You can also visit the Giraffe Center, a place where Giraffes—a species that is currently in danger of extinction—are protected. This center is the second largest concentration of giraffes in the world and the first in all of Kenya. There is also the Nairobi National Park, which is a reserved area to avoid hunting animals. Here you can see lions, cheetahs and rhinos in their natural habitat.
*Maasai Mara: it is an area of preserved savannah wilderness in southwestern Kenya. This reserve is part of the Serengeti region of Tanzania and bears his name because of the Maasai tribe that inhabits this area and the Mara River that crosses it. This place is part of the great migration, which is the largest migration of herbivorous animals in the world, managing to move more than 2 million animals over more than 3,000 km away; it begins in the Serengeti National Park at the beginning of May and by mid-July the largest number of animals have already moved to the Maasai Mara. In addition to this beautiful show where more than 1 million wildebeest moves, hundreds of thousands of zebras, gazelles and other animals, you can see the 5 greats of Africa: lions, leopards, African elephants, African buffaloes and the Black rhinoceros. There are few places throughout Africa where you can see all of them together in one place and in their natural habitat without being caged.
*Mombasa: the second most important city in all Kenya. If you get tired of enjoying the national parks and all that terrestrial biodiversity that you can find all over Kenya and what you want is to rest watching the waves and enjoying a coconut, without a doubt the beaches of Mombasa are the right place. Here you can find a lot of heavenly beaches with white sand and a great marine biodiversity; I recommend you to snorkel and dive since there are coral reefs that house thousands of fish and a variety of marine flora. You can also travel by motorcycle on these beaches or ride a camel. It is worth mentioning that most of the beaches are private and can be accessed through the hotels that preserve them.
My main recommendation is that you hire a tour that best adapts to your taste and needs. With them, you can get flights, accommodations, food and many safaris in one payment and without worrying about buying everything separately. There are tours from three days to over two weeks, plus some will travel throughout the country or some will focus on certain areas. The official currency of Kenya is the Kenyan Shilling and the main languages are Swahili and English.
Without more for the moment, I say goodbye not before wishing you have an excellent adventure. Greetings and have a safe trip!
