El discurso del Presidente del miércoles, 30 de julio, en el teatro Uptown en Kansas City, Mo., no sólo tuvo casa llena en el lugar en sí; también atrajo a una multitud de sus partidarios y detractores, entre ellos los Defensores de la Reforma Migratoria en Missouri.
La coalición organizó una demostración para subrayar la importancia de hacer frente al aumento de menores no acompañados que llegan a la frontera. Durante la manifestación, nosotros en Dos Mundos le preguntamos a algunos manifestantes sus reflexiones sobre la crisis nacional que involucra a menores no acompañados. Éstas son sus respuestas:
“Lo que necesitamos que él haga es actuar de inmediato. Esta crisis tiene mucho que ver con el fracaso del Congreso para actuar, pero tenemos que tratar (a los menos no acompañados que entran). Él ha estado enviando señales de su disposición para traicionar a los niños … y hacer retroceder las protecciones para los refugiados para que aprueben su paquete de aivio fronterizo.
“Realmente no espero que diga algo sobre la crisis fronteriza. Pero nosotros necesitamos que el Congreso esté dispuesto a aceptar una reforma migratoria”.

“La cosa es que, mientras estemos sentados aquí y sigamos ignorando el problema (de los menores no acompañados), esos chicos siguen siendo invisibles. Yo como que sé de lo que él está hablando hoy, así que no espero que aborde (la frontera). Pero esperamos que tome acción inmediata y reconozca la fuente de algo de esto: las políticas imperialistas de EE.UU.
“También es importante mantener un sentido de optimismo y esperanza de que, si seguimos viniendo aquí, el público comenzará a escuchar”.

“Yo sólo quiero que detengan las deportaciones. Creo que es ridícula la forma en que Obama está manejando (la inmigración). Necesitamos encontrar alguna manera para facilitar el trabajo de la reforma migratoria y elaborar algo para tener aquellos que quieren vivir aquí. Esto va a tener que venir de un cambio fundamental en la política estadounidense.
“Y tenemos que recordar que muchas de las personas que llegan a la frontera son, como mis padres, gente que no eligió dejar su país, pero que no vio ningún otro camino. Mis padres no vinieron aquí para hacerme un favor. Es ridículo asumir que la situación de todos es la misma”.

A pesar de que el presidente Obama pasó a pocos minutos con la maquillista Jolie Carillo-Allen antes de su discurso, todavía hubo suficiente tiempo para intercambiar bromas sobre, por ejemplo, la escena de la barbacoa local y priorizar las metas de carrera del cónyuge.
“Él quería saber si yo nací y me crié en Kansas City”, dijo la nativa del sur de California. “Y por supuesto que no soy y le dije que me mudé aquí con mi marido por su trabajo. Y él dice: ‘Créeme, entiendo que tengas que mudarte por el trabajo de un cónyuge’ ”.
Antes de que el Presidente se tomara una foto con Carillo-Allen, ella pudo trabajar con un mariposeo desenfrenado lo suficiente como para tener una idea del Presidente, quien es—refirió ella—exactamente como uno piensa que sería: cálido y profesional.
“Era súper agradable. Él entró y se dirigió a mí por su nombre”, comentó. “Tuve probablemente cinco minutos con él, pero él es tan dulce como uno pueda imaginar”.
Street Talk: Immigration rally at Obama appearance
President Obama’s speech on Wednesday (July 30) at the Uptown Theatre in Kansas City, Mo., didn’t just draw a full house at the venue itself: It also pulled a crowd of his supporters and detractors, including the Missouri Immigration Reform Advocates.
The coalition organized a demonstration to underscore importance of addressing the increase in unaccompanied minors coming to the border. During the demonstration, we at Dos Mundos asked some of the demonstrators for their thoughts on the national crisis involving unaccompanied minors. The following are their answers:
“What we need him to do is to act immediately. This crisis has everything to do with Congress’ failure to act, but we need to treat (incoming unaccompanied minors). He’s been signaling a willingness to sell out the kids … and roll back protections for refugees to get his package of border relief passed.
“I’m really not expecting him to say anything about the border crisis. But we need Congress to be willing to accept immigration reform.”

“The thing is, while we sit here and continue to ignore the problem (of unaccompanied minors), those kids continue to be invisible. I kind of know what he’s talking about today, so I don’t expect him to address (the border). But we’re hoping he takes immediate action and recognizes the source of some of this: imperialist U.S. policies.
“It’s also important to keep a sense of optimism and hope that, if we keep coming out here, the audience will start to listen.”

“I just want the deportations to stop. I think it’s ridiculous the way Obama’s handling (immigration). We need to find some way to facilitate working immigration reform and work out something to have those that want to live here stay. That’s going to need to come from a fundamental change in U.S. policy.
“And we need to remember that a lot of the people coming to the border are, like my parents, people who didn’t choose to leave their country, but saw no other way. My parents didn’t come here to do me a favor. It’s ridiculous to assume that everyone’s situation is the same.”

Even though President Obama spent just a few minutes make up artist Jolie Carillo-Allen before his speech, there was still enough time to exchange pleasantries on, for example, the local barbeque scene and prioritizing spouse’s career goals.
“He wanted to know if I was born and raised in Kansas City,” Carillo-Allen, a southern California native, said. “And of course I’m not and I told him I moved here for with my husband for his job. And he goes, ‘Believe me, I understand having to move for a spouse’s job.’”
Before the President took a photo with Carillo-Allen, she was able to work through a riotous spell of butterflies long enough to get a sense of the president, which is she said exactly as you think he’d be: warm and professional.
“He was just super nice. He came in and addressed me by name,” Carillo-Allen said. “I had probably five minutes with him, but he’s just as sweet at you can imagine.”
