Por ser marzo el mes de la mujer, Dos Mundos ha elegido mujeres latinas que han sobresalido en la comunidad y han dado ejemplo alcanzando grandes metas y posiciones por su esfuerzo y dedicación en las diferentes industrias.
Director de escuela secundaria fomenta a los latinos a involucrarse
Connie Springfield quiere incentivar a los latinos a ser más activos y llenar las posiciones de liderazgo de la comunidad.
Un residente del área de Kansas City desde 1990, la directora asociada de Shawnee Mission (Kan.) West High School fue a la Universidad de Park con una beca de voleibol y recibió su maestría en dirección y administración de educación en la Universidad de Missouri-Kansas. Ella está tratando de obtener su doctorado, mientras trabaja como directora asociada y participa en la comunidad hispana.
“Los estudiantes latinos necesitan más de una voz en la escuela,” dijo Springfield. “Así que (después de asistir Park), decidí continuar mi educación y obtener mi maestría. Después, llegué a ser administradora y fui al distrito escolar de Kansas City, Mo…. Eso fue cuando necesitaban administradores bilingües».
De acuerdo con Springfield, sigue habiendo una necesidad de líderes latinos y que latinos estén involucrados en los comités y eventos de la comunidad. Ella está tratando de establecer un ejemplo al servirle a la comunidad en el KC Biz Fest.
«He estado … el comité KC Biz Fest durante 11 años», dijo. «Hemos sido capaces de crecer; empezamos con 25 alumnos… Desde entonces, hemos tenidos a más de 100 estudiantes por año a los que nunca les habían ayudado antes».
Debido a su participación en la comunidad, Springfield fue nominada para el Premio Nueva Estrella Latina en el Annual Global Latino Fest en Chicago y reconocida como una de los semifinalistas de Verizon en el 2011. Ella invita a los demás para que guíen y capaciten a otros latinos a tener éxito.
De acuerdo a Springfield, muy frecuentemente los estudiantes latinos se les impide alcanzar su potencial debido a la falta de motivación y las barreras que enfrentan.
«Una gran parte del tiempo, nosotros (los latinos) ponemos las barreras», dijo. . «Dicen, ‹Oh, yo soy latina, no voy demasiado lejos» … me sentí como que podía hacer una diferencia – a que vean una minoría en una posición de liderazgo. Fue entonces cuando me hice más activa «.

High school principal encouraging Latinos to get involved

Connie Springfield wants to encourage Latinos to become more active and fill community leadership positions.
A Kansas City area resident since 1990, the Shawnee Mission (Kan.) West High School associate principal attended Park University on a volleyball scholarship and received her master’s degree in educational leadership and administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas. She’s pursuing her doctorate while working as associate principal and being involved in the Hispanic community.
“Latino students need more of a voice in school,” Springfield said. “So (after attending Park), I decided to continue my education and get my master’s. Then, I became an administrator and went to the Kansas City, Mo., school district…. That’s when they needed bilingual administrators.”
According to Springfield, there remains a need for Latino leaders and for Latinos to be involved with boards and community events. She’s trying to set an example by serving the community at the KC Biz Fest.
“I’ve been … (on) the KC Biz Fest committee for 11 years,” she said. “We’ve been able to grow. We started with 25 students.… Since then, we’ve brought it up to over 100 students per year that were never helped before.”
Because of her involvement and community advocacy, Springfield was nominated for The Nueva Latina Estrella Award at the Annual Global Latino Fest in Chicago and recognized as a Verizon semifinalist in 2011. She encourages others to mentor and empower other Latinos to succeed. Too often, Latino students are prevented from reaching their potential because of a lack of motivation and the barriers they face, according to Springfield.
“A lot of the time, we (latinos) put (up) the barriers,” she said. “They say, ‘Oh I’m Latina, I’m not going too far’.… I felt like I could make a difference – to (have them) see a minority in a leadership position. That’s when I became more active.”
