Tormentas e inundaciones: tomar precaución

Strom

Storms and flood warnings: Take proper precautions

Commentary by Dermidio Juez-Perez
The recent storms in the Kansas City area produced record rainfall and flash flooding. Reportedly, there were 3.65 inches of rain measured on Tuesday (April 26) at Kansas City International Airport, breaking the record of 1.85 inches, set in 2009.
As of this writing, the rains have caused small, dispersed pockets of area flooding. Not much permanent damage has been reported, but it’s believed that if the rains continue at this rate, the possibilities of more serious flooding are high.
Because this is the season for severe storms, monitor your area weather online at such sites as www.weather.com or via The Weather Channel on television. Because power outages are possible during severe spring storms, it’s recommended that you buy a weather radio to alert you of any thunderstorm, flood or tornado warnings.
In the event of a flash flood warning, find safe, high ground. Flash floods develop quickly and you might run out of time if you wait too long.
In short, it’s important to be well-prepared for potential severe weather. If you’re well-prepared, you have a much better chance of surviving a flood or other type of severe weather and minimizing property damage. To be prepared, assemble a disaster kit with enough supplies for your entire household, such as drinking water, food, cash, medication, clothing and flashlights. If evacuation is necessary, identify a safe place where you and your loved ones can go. Your local library or public school might provide this kind of information.
I highly encourage you to take the proper precautions and remember that having a plan is just half the battle to surviving severe weather, such as the rainfall the area has experienced recently. The other half is making sure that every member of your household is aware of the plan.
