Time to celebrate the beginning of something big

Commentary by Dermidio Juez-Perez
As of this writing, Kansas City, Mo.’s new streetcar system was in the testing phase. On Friday (May 6), however, it’ll be open to the public.
That means it’s time to celebrate the city’s much-awaited accomplishment – an accomplishment that’s the beginning of something big.
To celebrate the opening of the system, the city is planning to host a series of street parties this weekend (May 6-8) along the streetcar route. It’ll start at 10 a.m. Friday with the grand opening ceremony featuring Kansas City Mayor Sly James. The ceremony will be followed by the inaugural ride. More celebrations will take place immediately after that first ride along the first streetcar route, which runs through the heart of downtown connecting the River Market, the Central Business District, the Crossroads Arts District, and the Union Station and Crown Center areas.
Mayor James correctly believes this is more than a celebration of the end of a long construction project; he believes it’s the first step to a truly historic transformation of the city.
“Building owners and developers have completed, started or announced more than $1.6 billion in construction (projects) in the KC streetcar district since the route was announced three years ago,” the mayor said. “I am confident the entire city will find new momentum as the KC streetcar energizes the heart of our community.”
I encourage you to enjoy the weekend celebrations and to explore our dynamic city with its many restaurants, boutique shops, museums, parks and other attractions that make Kansas City a great place to live and visit – attractions that include a new streetcar system.
Come on, Kansas City, let’s celebrate the beginning of something big!
