On Monday (July 10), Mexican First Minister Luis Videgaray began a three-day visit of Washington, D.C., dropping by the White House to meet with President Trump’s staff and members of the U.S. Congress to discuss the renegotiation of NAFTA and other topics.
According to news agency EFE, Videgaray also discussed immigration issues and how to combat drug trafficking.
Videgaray, who was accompanied by Mexican ambassador Geronimo Gutierrez, met with House Speaker Paul Ryan, Republican Sens. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, and Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar. Jared Kushner, White House innovations director, also met with Videgaray to discuss topics that heads of state had discussed during the recent G20 forum in Germany.
In a press release, the Mexican government stated that Videgaray reiterated during his visit that Mexico was ready to start renegotiating NAFTA, in hopes of modernizing the trade agreement to benefit the three countries involved.
“We are focusing … (on) getting together with senators and representatives from the Republican Party and the Democratic Party,” Videgaray was quoted by EFE as saying. “We want to expose to congressmen our position regarding the renegotiation of NAFTA. We are looking for a good negotiation process.”
Although a date hasn’t been set to start renegotiating NAFTA, Mexican experts believe it might happen in August.
In other U.S.-Mexico news, Videgaray also stated that Mexico wouldn’t pay for any wall that divides Mexican territory from U.S. territory.

Videgaray visita Estados Unidos
El lunes 10 de julio, el secretario de relaciones exteriores, Luis Videgaray, inició una visita de tres días a Washington, DC y se reunió en la Casa Blanca con el personal del Presidente Trump y los miembros del Congreso de Estados Unidos para discutir la renegociación del TLCAN y otros temas.
Según la agencia de noticias EFE, Videgaray también discutió temas de inmigración y maneras de combatir el narcotráfico.
Videgaray, quien estuvo acompañado por el embajador mexicano Geronimo Gutiérrez, se reunió con el presidente de la Cámara, Paul Ryan, los senadores republicanos Ted Cruz y Marco Rubio y el representante demócrata Henry Cuellar. Jared Kushner, director de innovación de la Casa Blanca, también se reunió con Videgaray para discutir temas que los jefes de Estado habían discutido durante el reciente foro del G20 en Alemania.
En un comunicado de prensa, el gobierno mexicano manifestó que Videgaray reiteró durante su visita que México estaba listo para iniciar la renegociación del TLCAN, con la esperanza de modernizar el acuerdo comercial en beneficio de los tres países involucrados.
“Nos estamos concentrando … en reunirnos con senadores y representantes del Partido Republicano y el Partido Demócrata”, indicó Videgaray citando a EFE. “Queremos exponer a los congresistas nuestra posición respecto a la renegociación del TLCAN. Estamos buscando un buen proceso de negociación “.
Aunque no se ha fijado una fecha para iniciar la renegociación del TLCAN, expertos mexicanos creen que podría ocurrir en agosto.
En otras noticias México-Estados Unidos, Videgaray también declaró que México no pagaría por ningún muro que divida el territorio mexicano del territorio de Estados Unidos.
