Bill Gates and a promising “super cow”

Analysis by Eulogio JP

Bill Gates is more than a computer genius. He’s also perhaps the world’s healthiest person – and a major philanthropist.
Through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the tech pioneer and his wife have donated hundreds of millions of dollars throughout the world. The billionaire’s latest ambitious project aims to help the world’s neediest people by creating a “super cow” that could withstand the extreme heat of Africa and produce more milk than any other kind of cow.
Bill and Melinda Gates have approved a $40-million investment in the Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines, an Edinburgh, Scotland-based, non-profit organization that researches animal genetics. Details haven’t been shared on how the process will evolve. Nor has an estimated date for this project to become a reality been given. However, Bill Gates seemed confident about this technological breakthrough during a recent interview with The Sun.
“Thanks to the genetic modification, it will mix the best of the genes of British and African beef – and (the cow) will be fed with more nutritious crops,” he told the English newspaper.
Genetics have helped British cows produce an average of 19 liters of milk per day. African species of cows produce a little over 1.6 liters. If science can help a cow survive the African heat while producing 19 liters of milk a day, it could help address Africa’s nutritional issues. By helping African agribusiness, it also could help address much of African’s poverty.
Bill Gates explained the importance of this project to a University of Edinburgh audience by stating: “If you care about the poor, you should care about agriculture. And if you care about agriculture, you (should) care about livestock.”
The billionaire further enlightened the audience by stating: “For more than a billion people living in the poorest countries, agriculture and livestock are a lifeline out of poverty. The science and research being led by the great minds here in Edinburgh are making huge strides in improving the health and productivity of livestock.”
Once this technology is developed, its use can be extended to help the neediest in Asia and South America, too.
