Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens finds himself in a position where he could lose his job.
As multiple news agencies reported, Greitens was indicted on Feb. 22 by a grand jury in St. Louis and charged with a felony – invasion of privacy for taking a semi-nude photo of a woman without her consent.
Before becoming governor, Greitens had an affair with the woman. During their relationship, Greitens took pictures of her and then threatened to release them if she talked.
Now that information about the affair and the pictures have come to light, the Republican governor is under pressure to resign, including from members of his own party.
“I think that the governor should resign immediately,” state Sen. Rob Schaaf, a longtime critic of the governor, recently stated. “And if he doesn’t resign, I think that the House needs to start its investigation and move quickly to resolve the situation.”
Even the idea of an impeachment is being examined. On Monday (Feb. 26), the Missouri House of Representative formally launched an investigation that could lead to Greitens’ impeachment and ouster. The House named seven members to a special committee that will lead the probe into Missouri’s chief executive.
“We have worked over the weekend and through today to formulate that committee,” House Speaker Todd Richardson told reporters. “I’ve asked the committee to begin its work this week.”
Rep. Jay Barnes, who will chair the committee, explained that the committee’s work will be limited to looking at the alleged crime.
Greitens has yet to respond to the news of the House investigation.
Both political parties are probably wondering how the investigation will affect the results of the upcoming midterm elections. Republicans are probably wondering if the governor’s affair and indictment will negatively affect the Missouri Senate race.
