Most Hispanics find it normal for older children to live with their parents.
Many people of other cultures don’t.
Strangely, many American parents want to get their children out of the house as quickly as possible. In fact, a New York couple took their 30-year-old son to court to evict him from the family home.
Could you imagine that happening in a Hispanic home? Most Hispanic mothers would love for their sons to stick around for as long as possible. Some Hispanic mothers would like for their sons to live at home until they get married. And when the time is right, a Hispanic mom doesn’t need a court order to evict her son. The “chancla” will do.
The couple said they had tried unsuccessfully to get their son, Michael, to move out for several months. They said they went as far as giving him several written notices to leave.
But after three strongly worded eviction notices, the couple saw no indications of him planning to leave. The next obvious step was to seek help from the courts. On May 22, the case was heard by the Supreme Court of the State of New York.
The judge sided with the parents.
“I’m granting the eviction,” the judge reportedly said. “I think the notice is sufficient.”
Unsurprisingly, the son has called the judge’s ruling unfair and “ridiculous.”
What would you have done in the parents’ case? What would you have done if you were the son?
I want my daughter to live with my wife and me for as long as possible. But then, she’s only 15 months old. Check back with me in about 18 years. I’ll probably have changed my mind by then.
I doubt, however, that I’ll need an eviction notice or a court’s assistance to get her to leave.

¿Podría esto suceder en un hogar hispano? La mayoría de las madres hispanas adorarían que sus hijos permanezcan el mayor tiempo posible. Algunas madres hispanas desean que sus hijos vivan en casa hasta que se casen. Y cuando sea el momento adecuado, una madre hispana no necesita una orden judicial para desalojar a su hijo. La “chancla” será suficiente.
La pareja dijo que habían tratado infructuosamente de que su hijo, Michael, se mudara por varios meses. Dijeron que fueron tan lejos como para darle varios avisos escritos para irse.
Pero después de tres avisos de desalojo fuertemente redactados, la pareja no vio indicios de que planeara irse. El próximo paso obvio fue buscar ayuda de los tribunales. El 22 de mayo, el caso fue escuchado por el Tribunal Supremo del Estado de Nueva York.
El juez se puso del lado de los padres.
“Estoy concediendo el desalojo”, dijo el juez. “Creo que el aviso es suficiente”.
Como era de esperar, el hijo ha calificado el fallo del juez como injusto y “ridículo”.

Yo quiero que mi hija viva con mi esposa y conmigo el mayor tiempo posible. Pero ella sólo tiene 15 meses ahora. Pregúntame en aproximadamente 18 años. Probablemente haya cambiado de opinión para entonces.
Sin embargo, dudo que necesite un aviso de desalojo o la asistencia de un tribunal para que mi hija se mude.
