“Hell Fest” is not like other horror movies, according to actor Matt Mercurio.
Mercurio plays Asher in the film, which follows a group of teens as they are terrorized by a serial killer who is part of a theme park, also called Hell Fest. Released theatrically in late September, the film will be available on Dec. 21 through digital streaming services and then be released on Blu-Ray and DVD formats on Jan. 8, 2019.
Recently, Mercurio talked to Dos Mundos about his role in the movie and why people should watch it.
Dos Mundos: Tell me about your character, Asher.
Matt Mercurio: Asher is definitely the party guy in the group and wants to make sure everyone is having as good of a time as him. He wants to make sure that Hell Fest is as much as fun to everyone else as (it is to) him. He is making sure that everyone is having fun, laughing and being scared. He is just making sure that his friends are having as good as time as him.
DM: Do you think that Asher and you are alike in terms of personality?
MM: I’m not quite as forward as Asher, but definitely the having fun aspect and the energy that Asher brings to the table, that would be me. I always want to make sure that my friends and family are having a good time and that everyone is cheerful, and I’m typically the one to make the toast (at parties) – and so, that’s very much me. The spirit, the energy and the group vibes that Asher brings to the table, … (those are) me.
DM: Was it hard for you to give Asher life?
MM: Yeah, it wasn’t hard to bring him to life. He was so much fun. There are certain elements that are slightly different … (from) my own character. I wouldn’t say it was difficult to play Asher.
DM: What was the first thing that came to your mind when you read the script?
MM: The first thing that came to my mind when I was reading the script was like, “Oh, wow!” I stood up for one second – and when there was a turning point, I was like, “I can’t believe they did that.” Any time you read something that is suspense or sci-fi, your imagination gets … the best of you – and I was a little creeped out when I was reading it, and I know that was a good sign. I knew that I was going to be able to do the same thing. I had to (do) this because it was different and it took some risks and chances, and I enjoyed (the script). I was reading (it) and I was like, “I (have) got to be part of this story.”
DM: What makes “Hell Fest” different from other horror movies?
MM: I think it is different because the park is the (main) character. … (There) is an element of vulnerability that you don’t have in … other situations or some horror movies. It allows you to be scared of all … different (kinds of) things. It also has the classic element of horror. It is just a different spin.
DM: Why do you think people should watch the movie?
MM: If people are looking to have a good time, this is the movie for you, especially right after the holidays. People are looking for scares, and this movie is right after the holidays. Why not … watch something different? I think this movie is fun and is funny and it is scary. And it is definitely a good movie to watch with friends and family if they (are) still around. It is just a good movie to watch with a group of people and have a good time. You totally can have a little bit of overflow.

“Hell Fest” no es como otras películas de terror, según el actor Matt Mercurio.
Mercurio interpreta a Asher en la película, que sigue a un grupo de adolescentes mientras son aterrorizados por un asesino en serie que forma parte de un parque temático, también llamado Hell Fest. Dos Mundos: Dime sobre tu personaje, Asher.
Matt Mercurio: Asher es definitivamente el chico fiestero del grupo y quiere asegurarse de que todos la estén pasando tan bien como él. Quiere asegurarse que Hell Fest sea tan divertido para todos los demás como lo es para él. Se está asegurando de que todos se diviertan, se rían, y se asusten. Sólo se está asegurando que sus amigos la estén pasando tan bien como él.
DM: ¿Crees que Asher y tú sean iguales en términos de personalidad?
MM: No soy tan de frente como Asher, pero definitivamente el aspecto de pasarla bien y la energía que Asher trae a la mesa, ese sería yo. Siempre quiero asegurarme que mis amigos y mi familia estén pasándola bien y que todos estén contentos, y por lo general yo soy el que da los discursos (en las fiestas), todo eso es lo que soy. El espíritu, la energía y el grupo de vibraciones que Asher trae a la mesa, … esos son yo.
DM: ¿Fue difícil para ti el dar vida a Asher?
MM: Sí, no fue difícil darle vida. Fue muy divertido. Hay ciertos elementos que son un poco diferentes … de cómo soy. No diría que fue difícil interpretar a Asher.
DM: ¿Qué fue lo primero que se te ocurrió cuando leíste el guión?
MM: Lo primero que me vino a la mente cuando estaba leyendo el guión fue: “Oh, wow!” Me puse de pie por un momento, y cuando había un punto de inflexión, dije: “No puedo creer que hicieron eso”. Cada vez que lees algo que es suspenso o ciencia ficción, tu imaginación saca lo mejor de ti, y me asusté un poco cuando lo estaba leyendo y supe que esa era una buena señal. Sabia que sería capaz de hacer lo mismo. Tenía que hacer esto porque era diferente y tomó varios riesgos y oportunidades y disfruté (el guión). Lo estaba leyendo y pensaba: “Tengo que ser parte de esta historia”.
DM: ¿Qué hace a “Hell Fest” diferente de otras películas de terror?
MM: Creo que es diferente porque el parque es el personaje principal. … (Hay) un elemento de vulnerabilidad que no tienes en … otras situaciones o algunas películas de terror. Te permite estar asustado de toda clase de cosas. También tiene el elemento clásico del horror. Es sólo un giro diferente.
DM: ¿Por qué crees que las personas deberían ver la película?
MM: Si la gente busca pasar un buen rato, esta película es ellos, especialmente después de la época festiva. La gente está buscando sustos, y esta película es justo después de las épocas festivas. ¿Por qué no … ver algo diferente? Creo que esta película es divertida y graciosa y de miedo. Y es definitivamente una buena película para ver con amigos y la familia si aún están por ahí. Es sólo una buena película para ver con un grupo de personas y pasar un buen rato. Puedes tener un poco de rebosamiento.
