Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about a city in our neighboring country Mexico, considered one of the magical towns in that region that served as inspiration for Disney’s “Coco” due to its strong influence in the Day of the Dead’s annual celebrations. We refer to Patzcuaro, Mexico. The city’s foundation goes back to 1534 and it has less than 100,000 inhabitants.
Within the city is the Lake of Patzcuaro in which there are seven islands, of which the most famous is Janitzio. During the Day of the Dead celebration on Nov. 2, people of the region go to the cemetery and to different points of the lake to decorate the tombs with flowers of cempasuchil besides adorning them with candles and various offerings for their loved ones; undoubtedly one of the places in all of Mexico where it is more spectacular to see this beautiful celebration to the loved ones who are no longer in this world.
Round-trip flights from Kansas to Morelia have an average cost of $570 and have at least one layover. There are no direct flights to Patzcuaro so you have to get to Morelia first, only 60 km away, and then travel by car or bus. The best way to get around the city is by car, though the city is small. If you want to visit the lake, you would have to go there by car; I recommend you rent a car after your arrival to the Morelia airport. Lodging at a 3-star hotel has an average cost of $40 per night and $200 per night in a 5-star hotel, though it will be hard to find more options of this kind. The region’s cuisine is very popular throughout the country. Do not forget to try the corundas, a type of triangular tamale that is accompanied with cream, cheese and rajas. As a dessert you should try the morelianos and chongos zamoranos (from a nearby city). As a drink, do not miss the chocolate of metate, and the charanda, a drink made from cane liquor. The average cost of a full meal is $7 with dessert included.
The places you should visit during your next trip to Patzcuaro are the following:
Basilica of Our Lady of Health: the most important temple of the city that honors the Virgin of Health. Inside, it has an image of the virgin made of almost person-size and dating from the year 1538, being the original Virgin Mary on the continent. It is said that after performing many miracles related to health is that they chose to know the Virgin as the Lady of Health. This basilica has the beginnings of its construction in the year 1543, so it is close to having half a millennium of life. It is said that in 1962 an individual fired 10 bullets with a long-range rifle on the image of the virgin and, inexplicably or by a miracle, none of them managed to damage the image.
House with the 11 courtyards: old Santa Catarina Covent. Nowadays, this beautiful place is a craft center where, besides finding many craft workshops, you can find a wide variety of crafts made of wood, cloth, mud and more to buy. You must also visit the 11 courtyards that have beautiful details of colonial architecture.
Main pier: site where boats leave for the seven islands. Here, in addition to enjoying a beautiful view of the lake, you can enjoy multiple restaurants with snacks. Another excellent place to look for handicrafts is the wooden craft market that is on the way to the pier.
Janitzio Island: the main island located inside Lake of Patzcuaro. At the top of the island there is a large monument to the national hero José María Morelos y Pavón. Inside the monument there is a collection of paintings that describe the biography of the Mexican hero, also in the raised fist of the monument there is a viewpoint that also allows you to see from the top the whole island and a large part of the lake. To get to the island, you must take a boat from the main pier.
Tzintzuntzan: it was the most important city of the Purépecha pre-Columbian empire. In this beautiful and ancient place you will find an archaeological zone and a superb Franciscan ex-convent, as well as the first cathedral of the region founded in 1526. The archaeological site called Las Yácatas has a privileged view of the lake, and in this place was where the Purépechas (ancient pre-Columbian civilization) formed their ceremonial center in addition to the capital of their empire. This is another of the most important sites to enjoy the Day of the Dead celebration on Nov. 2 (starting the night of Nov. 1). It should be noted that this small city is not part of Patzcuaro but it is an adjoining city only 17 km away.

Conoce Pátzcuaro
Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de una ciudad de nuestro país vecino México, considerada uno de los pueblos mágicos de esa región, que sirvió como inspiración para la película de Disney “Coco” debido a su fuerte influencia en las celebraciones anuales del día de muertos: nos referimos a Pátzcuaro, México. La fundación de la ciudad data del año 1534 y cuenta con menos de 100 mil habitantes.
Dentro de la ciudad se encuentra el lago de Pátzcuaro en el cual se encuentran siete islas, de las cuales la más famosa es Janitzio. Durante la celebración del día de muertos el día 2 de noviembre los habitantes de la región acuden al cementerio y a distintos puntos del lago a adornar las tumbas con flores de cempasúchil además de adornar con velas y variadas ofrendas para sus seres queridos; sin duda uno de los lugares de todo México en donde es más espectacular ver este bello festejo a los seres queridos que ya no están en este mundo.
Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Morelia tienen un costo promedio de $570 y cuentan con al menos una escala. No existen vuelos directos a Pátzcuaro por lo que hay que llegar primero a Morelia, a tan sólo 60 km de distancia, y de ahí desplazarse en auto o en camión. La mejor manera de moverse dentro de la ciudad es en automóvil, aunque la ciudad es pequeña. Si quieres conocer el lago deberás trasladarte en un vehículo, te recomiendo rentes el vehículo en tu llegada al aeropuerto de Morelia. El hospedaje en un hotel 3 estrellas tiene un costo promedio de $40 la noche y en un hotel 5 estrellas de $200 la noche, aunque será difícil encontrar más de una opción de este tipo. La gastronomía de la región es muy querida en todo el país. No dejes de probar las corundas, un tipo de tamal de forma triangular y que van acompañadas con crema, queso y rajas. Como postre deberás probar los ates morelianos y los chongos zamoranos (provenientes de una ciudad cercana). Como bebida no dejes de probar el chocolate de metate, y la charanda, una bebida hecha a base de aguardiente de caña. El costo promedio de una comida completa es de $7 con postre incluido.
Los lugares que debes ir sin lugar a dudas en tu próxima visita por Pátzcuaro son los siguientes:
Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Salud: el templo más importante de la ciudad y que rinde honor a la Virgen de la Salud. En su interior cuenta con una imagen de la virgen hecha de tamaño casi natural y que data del año 1538, siendo así la primigenia Virgen María en el continente. Se dice que después de realizar bastantes milagros con referencia a la salud es que se optó por conocerse como la Señora de la Salud. Esta basílica tiene los comienzos de su construcción en el año 1543, por lo que está cerca de tener medio milenio de vida. Se dice que en el año 1962 un individuo disparó 10 balas con un rifle de largo alcance sobre la imagen de la virgen e inexplicablemente o por obra de un milagro ninguna de ellas logró dañar la imagen.
Casa de los 11 patios: antiguo Convento de Santa Catarina. Actualmente este bello lugar es un centro artesanal en donde podrás encontrar además de múltiples talleres artesanales la venta de una gran variedad de artesanías hechas en madera, tela, barro y mucho más. Además deberás visitar los 11 patios que cuentan con bellos detalles de la arquitectura colonial.
Muelle Principal: sitio de donde salen las embarcaciones para las siete islas. Aquí, además de disfrutar de una hermosa vista del lago, podrás disfrutar de múltiples restaurantes de antojitos. Otro excelente lugar para buscar artesanías es el Mercado de artesanías de madera que se encuentra en camino al muelle.
Isla de Janitzio: es la isla principal que se encuentra dentro del Lago de Pátzcuaro. En lo alto de la isla se encuentra un gran monumento al héroe nacional José María Morelos y Pavón. En el interior del monumento se encuentra una colección de pinturas que describen la biografía del héroe mexicano, además en el puño alzado del monumento se encuentra un mirador que te permite además ver desde lo alto toda la isla y una gran parte del lago. Para llegar a la isla deberás tomar alguna embarcación desde el muelle principal.
Tzintzuntzan: fue la ciudad más importante del imperio precolombino purépecha. En este hermoso y antiguo lugar podrás encontrar una zona arqueológica y un soberbio ex-convento franciscano, además de la primer catedral de la región fundada en el año 1526. La zona arqueológica se llama Las Yácatas tiene una vista privilegiada del lago y en este lugar fue donde los purépechas (antigua civilización precolombina) formaron su centro ceremonial además de la capital de su imperio. Este es otro de los sitios más importantes para disfrutar del festejo del día de muertos el día 2 de noviembre (desde la noche del 1 de noviembre). Cabe destacar que esta pequeña ciudad no es parte de Pátzcuaro pero es una ciudad colindante a tan solo 17 km de distancia.
