The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an alert of a salmonella outbreak in the country.
According to the CDC, 1,003 cases of salmonella spanning 49 states have been reported during 2019, as Newsweek and other media outlets have reported. In addition, the CDC recently stated that, since July 29, 235 people have become sick because of salmonella strains, with two deaths also reported.
Moreover, the CDC stated that epidemiological and laboratory evidence indicated that contact with backyard poultry such as chicks and ducklings had been identified as the main sources of the outbreak.
“Six of the outbreak strains making people sick have been identified in samples collected from backyard poultry environments at people’s homes in California, Minnesota and Ohio, and from poultry environments at retail stores in Michigan and Oregon,” the CDC stated.
To avoid spreading the disease and avoid contracting it, the CDC has advised people to wash their hands with soap and water right after touching backyard poultry or anything in the area where they live and avoid letting backyard poultry enter their homes. The federal health agency also has advised people to set aside a pair of shoes for taking care of poultry, to avoid walking in the areas where the poultry congregate and to not take the shoes used for poultry care inside the house. Moreover, it is not advisable to eat or drink where the poultry live, nor to kiss and/or hug them.
Anyone who has been in contact with poultry and has developed symptoms that include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps is advised to visit a doctor to ensure they have not contracted salmonella.
CDC advierte sobre brote de salmonella
Los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés) emitieron una alerta de un brote de salmonella en el país.
Según el CDC, se reportaron 1,003 casos de salmonella en 49 estados durante 2019, como informaron Newsweek y otros medios de comunicación. Además, el CDC declaró recientemente que, desde el 29 de julio, 235 personas se han enfermado debido a cepas de salmonella, con dos muertes también reportadas.
Además, el CDC indicó que la evidencia epidemiológica y de laboratorio indicaba que el contacto con aves de corral de traspatio, como los polluelos y los patitos, se había identificado como las principales fuentes del brote.
“Seis de las cepas del brote que enferman a las personas han sido identificadas en muestras recolectadas de ambientes avícolas de traspatio en hogares de personas en California, Minnesota y Ohio, y de ambientes avícolas en tiendas minoristas en Michigan y Oregón”, indicó el CDC.
Para evitar la propagación de la enfermedad y evitar contraerla, el CDC aconseja que las personas se laven sus manos con jabón y agua justo después de tocar las aves de corral de traspatio o cualquier cosa en el área donde viven y eviten que las aves de corral de traspatio entren a sus hogares. La agencia federal de salud también ha aconsejado a las personas que guarden un par de zapatos para cuidar las aves de corral, para evitar caminar en las áreas donde se congregan las aves de corral y no llevar los zapatos utilizados para el cuidado de las aves de corral dentro de la casa. Además, no es aconsejable comer o beber donde viven las aves, ni besarlas o abrazarlas.
Cualquier persona que haya estado en contacto con aves de corral y haya desarrollado síntomas que incluyen diarrea, fiebre y calambres estomacales debe visitar a un médico para asegurarse de que no haya contraído salmonella.
