Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about the oldest city in the U.S., founded by the Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. We are talking about St. Augustine, Florida. This small city was founded in 1565 and nowadays it has a population of a little over 13,000 inhabitants.
The oldest occupied European settlement in the entire country is located in this small but picturesque city. It should be noted that for many years before the entire area of Florida had been explored by various conquerors, among which were Juan Ponce de León, who according to the legend, was in the search for the “eternal youth fountain,” but this has not been verified as true.
Round-trip flights from Kansas to St. Augustine have an average cost of $150 and you can find them without layovers. The best way to see the city is definitely by foot, although it is always a good option to rent a car if you plan to visit other cities in Florida, or take the tram that goes around the whole city. Lodging in this small city is pretty high compared to other small cities in the country. The average cost of a room in a 3-star hotel is $220 per night and in a 5-star hotel it is $300, although as always there are cheaper options in hostels and motels. As far as food is concerned, you will try very fresh food in every way, since if you decide to try the variety of seafood and fish they will almost all be freshly caught, while if you decide to try soups and vegetables these will be from the crops and orchards of the area. Therefore, your food will be much more organic and natural. The average cost of a full meal is $17, with dessert included.
The places you should not miss during your next visit for the colonial city of St. Augustine are:
*Castillo de San Marcos: it is the oldest structure in the city. The construction of this castle began in 1672 after several forts made of wood had been destroyed while trying to defend the city. One of the most interesting things about this castle is that it was built in ‘coquita,’ a type of limestone made naturally by shells and fragments of coral skeletons. Here you can learn the story of how it went from being a Spaniard fort to being conquered by the English and then being recovered by the Spaniards and finally being occupied by the Americans. From here you can enjoy beautiful views of the sea, you can see the canyons that protected this fort and see how they fire during the weekends, in addition to knowing the dungeon where traitors and prisoners spent the last days of their lives.
*Horror tours: haunted houses are found throughout the city where mysterious deaths occurred. These tours can be done in floats or carriages, and in addition to touring houses you will also pass through certain cemeteries where it is said that they have seen a variety of ghosts hanging around.
*Ponce de Leon Hotel: the oldest concrete luxury hotel in the country. Of renaissance style and built in 1887, it is the first building in the country made of concrete, where you can find a variety of hand-carved murals, in addition to large Tiffany stained glass windows, terracotta mosaics and reliefs throughout its walls and ceilings. It is currently part of the Flagler Institute.
*Fountain of Youth: this famous fountain is located inside the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park. Like it was mentioned at the beginning of this article, conqueror Ponce de Leon sought the famous fountain of youth and met the Timucua natives who lived there, who said that their oldest settlers who bathed in these waters and took them managed to rejuvenate. Currently there are still many people that try these waters in the hope of achieving eternal youth. In addition, native and colonial objects are exhibited in this park to honor Timucuan and Spanish heritage.
*Lightner Museum: located in the historic Hotel Alcazar. This beautiful hotel was ordered by Henry Flagler to be built by the Ponce de León Hotel. It is currently an antique museum, which is divided over three floors. In the first one, you will find a Victorian town with lots of sculptures, art pieces, artifacts of the golden age among others. On the second floor, you will see many examples of carved glass, Victorian art glass and a collection of Tiffany style glass. On the third floor, you can find sculptures, furniture and oil paintings and much more. The entrance fee is $16.

Conoce San Agustín
Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de la ciudad más antigua de EE.UU., fundada por el almirante español Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. Nos referimos a San Agustín, Florida. Esta pequeña ciudad fue fundada en el año 1565 y actualmente cuenta con poco más de 13 mil habitantes.
El asentamiento europeo más antiguo ocupado en todo el país se encuentra en esta pequeña pero pintoresca ciudad. Cabe destacar que desde muchos años antes toda la zona de Florida había sido explorada por diversos conquistadores, entre los que destacan Juan Ponce de León, quien según cuenta la leyenda estaba en la búsqueda de la “Fuente de la eterna juventud”, pero no se puede corroborar del todo esta versión como verídica.
Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a San Agustín tienen un costo promedio de $150 y puedes encontrarlos sin escalas. La mejor manera sin lugar a dudas para recorrer esta pequeña pero pintoresca ciudad es a pie, aunque siempre es buena opción la renta de vehículo si tienes planeado visitar otras ciudades de Florida o bien el servicio de tranvía que atraviesa casi toda la ciudad. El hospedaje en este pequeña ciudad es bastante elevado a comparación con otras ciudades pequeñas del país. El costo promedio de una habitación en un hotel 3 estrellas es de $220 por noche y en un hotel 5 estrellas es de $300, aunque como siempre hay opciones más económicas tanto en hostales y moteles. En cuanto a comida se refiere, probarás comida muy fresca en todos los sentidos, ya que si decides probar la variedad de mariscos y pescados serán casi recién pescados, mientras que si decides probar sopas y verduras estas serán de los cultivos y huertos de la zona por lo que además tu comida será mucho más orgánica y natural. El costo promedio de una comida completa es de $17 con postre incluido.
Los lugares que no deberás perderte en tu próxima visita por la colonial ciudad de San Agustín son:
*Castillo de San Marcos: es la estructura más antigua de la ciudad. La construcción de este castillo empezó en el año 1672 luego de que varios fuertes hechos en madera habían sido destruidos al intentar defender a la ciudad. Una de las cosas más interesantes de este castillo es que fue construido en coquita, un tipo de roca caliza hecha naturalmente por conchas y fragmentos de esqueletos de corales. Aquí podrás conocer la historia de cómo pasó de ser un fuerte español a ser conquistado por los ingleses para luego ser nuevamente recuperado por los españoles y finalmente ser ocupado por los estadounidenses. Desde aquí podrás disfrutar de unas hermosas vistas del mar, podrás ver los cañones que protegían a este fuerte y ver cómo disparan durante los fines de semana, además de conocer la mazmorra en donde los traidores y prisioneros pasaban los últimos días de sus vidas.
*Recorridos de terror: a lo largo de toda la ciudad se encuentran casas embrujadas en donde ocurrieron misteriosas muertes. Estos recorridos los podrás hacer en carrozas o carruajes, y además de recorrer casas también pasarás por determinados cementerios en donde se dice que se han visto gran variedad de fantasmas merodeando.
*Hotel Ponce de León: el hotel lujoso de concreto más antiguo del país. De estilo renacentista y construido en el año 1887, es el primer edificio en el país hecho de hormigón, en donde podrás encontrar una gran variedad de murales tallados a mano, además de grandes vitrales de Tiffany, mosaicos y relieves de terracota a lo largo de su paredes y techos. Actualmente es parte del Instituto Flagler.
*Fuente de la juventud: esta famosa fuente se encuentra dentro del Parque Arqueológico Nacional Juvenil. Como se hizo mención al inicio del artículo, el conquistador Ponce de León buscó la famosa fuente de la juventud y conoció a los nativos Timucua que ahí vivían, quienes decían que sus más antiguos pobladores que se bañaban en estas aguas y tomaban de ellas lograban rejuvenecer. Actualmente aún asisten gran cantidad de personas a probar de estas aguas con la esperanza de conseguir la juventud eterna. Además en este parque se exhiben objetos nativos y también coloniales para homenajear el patrimonio timucuan y español.
*Museo Lightner: se encuentra en el antiguo Hotel Alcázar. Este hermoso hotel fue mandado a construir por Henry Flagler el mismo que mandó hacer el Hotel Ponce de León. Actualmente es un museo de antigüedades, que está dividido a lo largo de tres pisos. En el primero encontrarás un pueblo victoriano con gran cantidad de esculturas, piezas de arte, artefactos de la edad dorada entre otros. En el segundo piso conocerás muchos ejemplos de vidrio tallado, vidrio de arte victoriano además de una colección de vidrio de estilo Tiffany. En el tercer piso podrás conocer esculturas, muebles y pinturas al óleo y mucho más. El costo de entrada es de $16.
