Each March to honor Women’s History Month, Dos Mundos honors Latinas whose accomplishments have helped and/or inspired the community. One of this year’s eight honorees is Diana Martinez, director of Head Start at The Family Conservancy.
Born in the United States and of Latin heritage, Martinez grew up negotiating the two worlds. She was working for Dos Mundos when she enrolled as a Head Start mother. Over 10 years, she went from being a Family Conservancy staff member to directing its Head Start program.
Head Start is a government-funded program that works with low-income families, providing early education services to children, and management resources and guidance to parents. According to the National Head Start Association, the program has helped “more than 37 million low-income and other vulnerable children” nationwide during its 55-year history.
Martinez knows from personal experience how effective Head Start can be.
“Head Start is in my veins,” she said. “Once, I was one of the parents. … I lived in the same kind of situation.”
Head Start changed life for Martinez and her son. Today, she is doing the same for others.
“I’m here to serve people and give back to the community,” Martinez said. “I do what I do because I want to help them to become what they are destined to be. We are here for a reason. Sometimes, you just need someone to have faith in you. That’s how you grow like a plant and reach your full potential.”
America’s two major political parties have supported funding Head Start so that Martinez and others can help children and their families reach their potential. Recently, Republican and Democratic lawmakers got to see how Head Start resources are helping communities when Martinez took two mothers to visit the offices of U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, and U.S. Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran.
The mothers were nervous about talking with the lawmakers, but they needed to share their truths with the politicians, Martinez said.
Martinez hoped the meeting would be empowering for the mothers. And in keeping with March as Women’s History Month, she has some words to share with other Latinas that she hope will empower them.
“You are going to be Wonder Woman if you believe it,” Martinez said. “All mothers are wonder women, only a little smaller and less fit. The Latin community should stay strong during these hard times. Don’t lose hope. … People are recognizing and supporting what we are doing.”

Martínez está empoderando a la comunidad latina
Cada marzo para honrar el mes de la historia de la mujer, Dos Mundos honra a las latinas cuyos logros han ayudado y/o inspirado a la comunidad. Una de las ocho homenajeadas de este año es Diana Martínez, directora de Head Start en The Family Conservancy.
Original de Estados Unidos y de herencia latina, Martínez creció entre los dos mundos. Ella estaba trabajando para Dos Mundos cuando se inscribió como madre de Head Start. Durante 10 años, pasó de ser miembro del personal de Family Conservancy a dirigir el programa Head Start.
Head Start es un programa financiado por el gobierno que trabaja con familias de bajos ingresos, brinda servicios de educación temprana a niños y recursos de gestión y orientación a los padres. Según la Asociación Nacional de Head Start, el programa ha ayudado a “más de 37 millones de niños de bajos ingresos y otros niños vulnerables” en todo el país durante sus 55 años de historia.
Martínez sabe por experiencia personal cuán efectivo puede ser Head Start.
«Head Start está en mis venas”, dijo. “Una vez, fui uno de los padres. … viví en el mismo tipo de situación».
Head Start cambió la vida de Martínez y su hijo. Hoy, ella está haciendo lo mismo por los demás.
“Estoy aquí para servir a las personas y retribuir a la comunidad”, dijo Martínez. “Hago lo que hago porque quiero ayudarlos a convertirse en lo que están destinados a ser. Estamos aquí por una razón. A veces, sólo necesitas que alguien tenga fe en ti. Así es como puedes creces como una planta y alcanzar tu máximo potencial”.
Los dos principales partidos políticos de Estados Unidos han apoyado la financiación de Head Start para que Martínez y otros puedan ayudar a los niños y sus familias a alcanzar su potencial. Recientemente, los legisladores republicanos y demócratas pudieron ver cómo los recursos de Head Start están ayudando a las comunidades cuando Martínez llevó a dos madres a visitar las oficinas de la representante estadounidense Sharice Davids y a los senadores estadounidenses Pat Roberts y Jerry Moran.
Las madres estaban nerviosas por hablar con los legisladores, pero necesitaban compartir sus verdades con los políticos, dijo Martínez.
Martínez esperaba que la reunión fuera empoderadora para las madres. Al ser marzo el mes de la Historia de la mujer, ella tiene algunas palabras para compartir con otras latinas que espera que las empoderen.
“Vas a ser la mujer maravilla sí lo crees”, dijo Martínez. “Todas las madres son una mujer maravilla, sólo un poco más pequeñas y menos en forma. La comunidad latina debe mantenerse fuerte durante estos tiempos difíciles. No pierdas la esperanza. … la gente reconoce y apoya lo que estamos haciendo”.
