Alexis Abarca Garcia embraces her opportunities to positively affect people’s lives.
One opportunity the Kansas City, Missouri, resident has to do so is as a school counselor at the Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts.
“I enjoy knowing that I am helping to make a positive impact,” she said. “I also like supporting my co-workers and community partners. Being in education can be very difficult at times, but I feel like the rewards are absolutely worth all of the hard work and effort.”
Abarca Garcia also serves as a public health coordinator at Mattie Rhodes. In that job, she strives to achieve health care access for all.
When Abarca Garcia isn’t serving others in education and health care, she enjoys cheering on the Greater Kansas City area’s pro sports teams, including the Chiefs, Current, Royals and Sporting Kansas City, she said. She also enjoys visiting places in Kansas City and spending time with her family.
For Abarca Garcia, family lies at the heart of everything she does.
“For me, the meaning of family includes sharing love, joy and compassion for one another,” she said. “It means supporting and communicating with each other, regardless of distance. I am very blessed to have a close-knit and wonderful family.”
That “close-knit” family includes her mother, whom Abarca Garcia considers her role model.
“She taught me through perseverance, grace and humility,” she said. “She is always there for me when I need her and is never lacking in advice. I strive to be a good mother like her, and I am lucky that my children get to have her as a grandmother. I can honestly say I would not be the person I am without my mother.”
Abarca Garcia’s mother is Mexican, as is her father. She was born in Hutchinson, Kansas.
“As a first generation Mexican-American, I feel proud and empowered to be a Latina. I have gotten to experience my life in a unique way, and I embrace my culture and I am glad to have the opportunity to share that culture with others, especially my kids. Being bilingual allows me to reach out and build relationships with people in my community,” said Abarca Garcia, who’s fluent in Spanish and English.
Abarca Garcia considers herself empathetic and outgoing, with a spirited sense of humor.
“I am hilarious,” she said.

Alexis Abarca García aprovecha sus oportunidades para afectar positivamente la vida de las personas.
Una oportunidad que tiene la residente de Kansas City, Missouri, para hacerlo es como consejera escolar en la Academia Paseo de Bellas Artes Escénicas.
“Disfruto sabiendo que estoy ayudando a generar un impacto positivo”, dijo. “También me gusta apoyar a mis compañeros de trabajo y socios comunitarios. Estar en la educación puede ser muy difícil a veces, pero siento que las recompensas valen absolutamente todo el arduo trabajo y esfuerzo”.
Abarca García también se desempeña como coordinadora de salud pública en Mattie Rhodes. En ese trabajo, se esfuerza por lograr el acceso a la atención médica para todos.
Cuando no está sirviendo a otros en educación y atención médica, le gusta animar a los equipos deportivos profesionales del área metropolitana de Kansas City, incluidos los Chiefs, Current, Royals y Sporting Kansas City, dijo. También le gusta visitar lugares en Kansas City y pasar tiempo con su familia.
Para Abarca García, la familia está en el centro de todo lo que hace.
“Para mí, el significado de familia incluye compartir amor, alegría y compasión unos por otros”, dijo. “Significa apoyarse y comunicarse unos con otros, sin importar la distancia. Me siento muy bendecida de tener una familia maravillosa y unida”.
Esa familia “muy unida” incluye a su madre, a quien Abarca García considera su modelo a seguir.
“Ella me enseñó a través de la perseverancia, la gracia y la humildad”, dijo. “Ella siempre está ahí para mí cuando la necesito y nunca le faltan consejos. Me esfuerzo por ser una buena madre como ella y tengo la suerte de que mis hijos la tengan como abuela. Honestamente puedo decir que no sería la persona que soy sin mi madre”.
Su madre es mexicana, al igual que su padre. Nació en Hutchinson, Kansas.
“Como mexicana-estadounidense de primera generación, me siento orgullosa y empoderada de ser latina. He podido experimentar mi vida de una manera única, acepto mi cultura y me alegra tener la oportunidad de compartir esa cultura con otros, especialmente con mis hijos. Ser bilingüe me permite acercarme y construir relaciones con la gente de mi comunidad”, dijo Abarca García, que habla español e inglés con fluidez.
Ella se considera empática y extrovertida, con un gran sentido del humor.
“Soy graciosa”, dijo.
