Gerardo “Jerry” Diaz, one of the famous skilled Mexican horsemen known as “charros,” and his family will bring their show in June to the Abdallah Shriners Rodeo and Demo Derby in Gardner, Kansas.
On June 12 and 13, at the Johnson County Fairgrounds, Diaz will perform at the rodeo alongside his wife Staci and son Nicolas.
“The beautiful thing is that we love what we do – we enjoy acting with and for the crowd, and it is amazing to see my son as such as skilled horseman,” Diaz said.
A fourth-generation charro, Diaz is continuing the traditions that started with his great-grandfather more than 150 years ago. His wife also comes from a family of horse people. They met 30 years ago at a horse exhibition while she was performing with her horse, he recalled.
“I invited her and her parents to the ranch, and long story short, we later got married,” he said.
To perform with his son is particularly special, Diaz said.
“Now I feel what my father felt when I was growing up,” he said. “He taught me the respect and mastery of horses, which is not easy; it takes vocation and a lot of dedication and discipline.”
Ed McConwell from the McConwell Law Offices, the sponsor of the Diaz family show for the rodeo, said he’s excited to bring Diaz’s horsemanship to the Greater Kansas City area.
“I think they’re very, very unique,” McConwell said. “I swear to goodness, he could get a horse to drink out of a straw and lay it on his back on the side. I mean, he’s really good. He gets the horse to do all kinds of stuff you just don’t normally see.”
Diaz invites the area’s Hispanic community to attend.
“Come have some fun with us,” he said. “It’s a family show with a lot of tradition.”
Tickets for the rodeo are $12 for adults and $6 for ages 4-12, with free admission for ages 3 and younger.

Jerry Díaz y su familia presentarán espectáculo de rodeo
Gerardo “Jerry” Díaz, uno de los famosos y hábiles jinetes mexicanos conocidos como charros, y su familia presentarán su espectáculo en junio en el Rodeo y Demostración Abdallah Shriners en Gardner, Kansas.
El 12 y 13 de junio, en el recinto ferial del condado de Johnson, Díaz actuará en el rodeo junto a su esposa Staci y su hijo Nicolas.
“Lo hermoso es que nos encanta lo que hacemos; disfrutamos actuando con y para el público, y es increíble ver a mi hijo como un jinete tan hábil”, dijo Díaz.
Charro de cuarta generación, Díaz continúa las tradiciones que comenzaron con su bisabuelo hace más de 150 años. Su esposa también proviene de una familia de amantes de los caballos. Se conocieron hace 30 años en una exhibición de caballos mientras ella actuaba con su caballo, recordó.
“La invité a ella y a sus padres al rancho y ya la historia se alarga y nos casamos”, dijo.
Actuar con su hijo es particularmente especial, dijo Díaz.
“Siento yo lo que sentía mi padre, al yo crecer al lado de él”, dijo. “Me inculcó lo que es el respeto, la maestría de los caballos, el arte, que no es fácil, la gente cree que es fácil, pero se lleva mucha vocación, mucha dedicación, mucho cariño, mucho amor, mucha disciplina, y muchos años”.
Ed McConwell, del bufete McConwell Law Offices, patrocinador del espectáculo familiar de Díaz para el rodeo, dijo estar emocionado de traer la equitación de Díaz al área metropolitana de Kansas City.
“Creo que son muy, muy únicos”, dijo McConwell. “Juro por Dios que podía hacer que un caballo bebiera de una pajita y se la tumbara de lado. Es realmente bueno. Hace que el caballo haga todo tipo de cosas que normalmente no se ven”.
Díaz invita a la comunidad hispana de la zona a asistir.
“Vengan a divertirse con nosotros”, dijo. “Es un espectáculo familiar con mucha tradición”.
Las entradas para el rodeo cuestan $12 para adultos y $6 para niños de 4 a 12 años. La entrada es gratuita para niños de 3 años o menos.
