While working as a first-grade teacher, Jordan Lowe realized there was a lack of geography books for kindergarteners and first-graders.
“One year, when I was teaching first grade, my best friend and I went to New Zealand over Christmas break; and when I got back, I shared all of the pictures and all of my stories with my students, and they were really, really eager to learn more about the trip and more about New Zealand as a country,” Lowe recalled. “So I went to the library … to get as many books as I could about New Zealand, and I could not find any that were for first-grade readers that would be at that reading level that they could understand. So it hit me that there was a need in the market and a need for kids, because they still love to learn about those things.”
That incident sparked the idea for “The Adventures of Hattie and Hank,” Lowe’s first book, which had a launch party Sunday (Sept. 7). The book is a nonfiction geography book, designed to be part of a series.
The first series installment is focused on Kansas. Future books will focus on other states, even other countries, Lowe said.
Dos Mundos founder Clara Reyes is featured in the first book under the section that focuses on influential people in Kansas.
“We wanted to make sure that we included people that weren’t just important in parentheses in Kansas, but people who were very influential,” Lowe said. “We wanted them to be influential all throughout, and all throughout the United States, and have made an impact for their community, for our community, and that is one of the reasons why we chose Clara.”
For Diana Reyes Raymer, manager of Reyes Media Group – the company that publishes Dos Mundos – it is an honor to have her mother honored in such a way.
“I am filled with joy and appreciation that Jordan Lowe has honored my mother, Clara Reyes, in her new book,” Reyes Raymer said. “She dedicated her life to creating connections and giving a voice to the Hispanic community through Dos Mundos. A Kansas native, Lowe knew the first book would be set in Kansas. Even though she has lived in the state her entire life, she realized while working on the book that there was a lot she didn’t know.
“I wanted to make sure to include things and people and places that not everyone would necessarily know right off the top of their head, so like some of the rock formations and whatnot, we wanted to make sure to include those; and then, the ancient ocean, the western interior seaway, we wanted to include that,” Lowe said.
The picture-heavy book is illustrated by Chelsea Buchanan, also a Kansan and friend of Lowe’s.
The book is a great way for teachers and parents to research about the people featured in it, Lowe said. The goal is to get it and the series into schools, she said.
“It would be just outstanding and amazing if we could get these books into schools, and then students all throughout Kansas could learn about (Reyes) as well,” Lowe said.

Mientras trabajaba como maestra de primer grado, Jordan Lowe se dio cuenta de la escasez de libros de geografía para niños de kínder y primer grado.
“Un año, cuando enseñaba primer grado, mi mejor amiga y yo fuimos a Nueva Zelanda durante las vacaciones de Navidad; y al regresar, compartí todas las fotos y todas mis historias con mis alumnos, y estaban muy, muy ansiosos por aprender más sobre el viaje y sobre Nueva Zelanda como país”, recordó Lowe. “Así que fui a la biblioteca… para conseguir todos los libros que pude sobre Nueva Zelanda, y no encontré ninguno para lectores de primer grado que tuvieran un nivel de lectura que pudieran entender. Entonces me di cuenta de que había una necesidad en el mercado y una necesidad para los niños, porque también les encanta aprender sobre estas cosas”.
Ese incidente dio origen a la idea de “Las aventuras de Hattie y Hank”, el primer libro de Lowe, cuya fiesta de lanzamiento tuvo lugar el domingo 7 de septiembre. El libro es un libro de geografía de no ficción, diseñado para formar parte de una serie.
La primera entrega de la serie se centra en Kansas. Los libros futuros se centrarán en otros estados, e incluso en otros países, afirmó Lowe.
La fundadora de Dos Mundos, Clara Reyes, aparece en el primer libro, en la sección dedicada a personas influyentes de Kansas.
“Queríamos asegurarnos de incluir a personas que no solo fueran importantes en Kansas, sino que fueran muy influyentes”, dijo Lowe. “Queríamos que fueran influyentes en todo Estados Unidos y que hubieran tenido un impacto positivo en su comunidad, en la nuestra, y esa es una de las razones por las que elegimos a Clara”.

Originaria de Kansas, Lowe sabía que el primer libro se ambientaría en Kansas. Aunque ha vivido en el estado toda su vida, mientras trabajaba en el libro se dio cuenta de que desconocía muchas cosas.
“Quería asegurarme de incluir cosas, personas y lugares que no todos conocen de memoria, así que queríamos incluir algunas formaciones rocosas y demás; y también el antiguo océano, la vía marítima interior occidental”, dijo.
El libro, repleto de imágenes, está ilustrado por Chelsea Buchanan, también de Kansas y amiga de Lowe.
El libro es una excelente manera para que maestros y padres investiguen sobre las personas que aparecen en él, dijo Lowe. El objetivo es que este libro y la serie lleguen a las escuelas, añadió.
“Sería extraordinario y maravilloso si pudiéramos llevar estos libros a las escuelas, y así los estudiantes de todo Kansas también podrían aprender sobre Reyes”, dijo Lowe.
