Guadalupe Centers Inc. (GCI) is about to do something that CEO Beto Lopez considers to be significant for the nonprofit organization and the Latino community it serves.
From 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 27, GCI will stage its annual Blanco y Negro Gala. The event will take place at Arrowhead Stadium – the home stadium for the pro football team the Kansas City Chiefs.
“Arrowhead Stadium is an iconic venue that symbolizes pride, excellence and community in Kansas City,” Lopez said. “Hosting the gala there underscores the significance of our mission and shows that Latino voices, culture and contributions belong on the biggest stages in our city.”
GCI decided to host the event at Arrowhead because it aligns with this year’s theme, “Legacy & Legends,” Lopez said. The theme “reflects the story of Guadalupe Centers,” he said.
“For more than a century, we’ve been building a legacy of service, guided by the legends, leaders and educators who shaped our path,” he said. “This year, we also honor today’s visionaries who are paving the way for tomorrow.”
And Arrowhead is the ideal place to honor GCI’s legacy and Greater Kansas City area legends because it’s “home to the Kansas City Chiefs’ storied legacy,” Lopez said. As he mentioned, it’s a stadium “where legends like Patrick Mahomes and even pop icons like Taylor Swift make appearances.”
Lopez promises a surprise for Swift fans who attend.
“You’ll have to get your tickets to see what it is,” he said.
Moreover, several community leaders will be recognized for their contributions to the Latino community. Edward Reyes – vice president of Reyes Media Group, which publishes Dos Mundos, and a GCI board member; and Chato Villalobos from the Guadalupe Educational Services board will receive the Thomas Purcell Award. They’re being honored for their contributions to the organization and the Guadalupe Centers Charter Schools board.
Other honorees will include Harley Dennis and Luis Posado, who’ll receive the Dorothy Gallagher Award. In addition, Michael Leno Garcia will receive the I. Pat Rios Award, and Scott Girard will accept the Robert Reeds Award on behalf of Girard Immigration Law.
But the event “is more than a celebration” of the award recipients and GCI’s legacy, according to Lopez.
“It’s a cornerstone of our ability to serve Kansas City’s Latino community,” he said. “Every dollar raised directly supports programs in education, workforce development, health and wraparound services.”
The event has grown into one of Kansas City, Missouri’s premier celebrations of culture and philanthropy, Lopez said.
“This year, we’re taking it to the next level with our ‘Legacy & Legends’ theme, and by moving from our admin building to Arrowhead Stadium, where legends are made,” he said.
Lopez credits staff members, volunteers and board members with making this year’s celebration – and other celebrations – possible.
“Whether it’s securing sponsorships, shaping the program or coordinating logistics, their commitment reflects the spirit of Guadalupe Centers – collaboration, service and pride in our community,” he said.

Guadalupe Centers organizará su Gala Blanco y Negro en el Arrowhead
Guadalupe Centers Inc. (GCI) está a punto de realizar algo que su director ejecutivo, Beto López, considera significativo para la organización sin fines de lucro y la comunidad latina a la que sirve.
El 27 de septiembre, de 7 a 10 p.m., el GCI presentará su Gala anual Blanco y Negro. El evento se llevará a cabo en el Estadio Arrowhead, sede del equipo de fútbol americano profesional, los Kansas City Chiefs.
