In honor of the patron saint of the community of Ciudad Ixtepec, formerly Villa de San Jerónimo, in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region of Oaxaca, preparations for the nighttime festivities known as Calendas are in full swing ahead of the grand celebration. This celebration is characterized by the multicolored tapestry formed by the light of wicks and lanterns and the associated activities: the band, the traditional castle, the rockets, the bulls, and the traditional drink mistela (a mixture of grapes and aguardiente must), which cannot be missed in a perfect setting for the celebration of the Vela Veintisiete.
It is a legendary tradition among the founding members that each year an Isthmus woman is chosen to be queen of this festival. Her election has an honorary significance for the person who will wear the crown and scepter, as it carries with it the distinction of spreading and preserving the cultural heritage of her ancestors.
In 2025, the reign will be led by Daira Moreno López. It is worth mentioning that the election of this beautiful Isthmus woman was carried out according to her corresponding position on the list where her parents, Ángel Moreno and Nora Cecilia López de Moreno, registered their daughter’s name from the day of her birth, so that when the time came, she would be elected queen. Her maternal grandparents, founding members, registered Daira’s mother, Nora Cecilia Toledo, who in her time, like other sovereigns, also bore the legacy of this crown.
While it’s true that the Vela Veintisiete celebration is the perfect setting for the queen’s coronation, it will also be the perfect setting to welcome the arrival of autumn, with an unparalleled spectacle whose eyes will delight in the beauty and color of the embroidery on the gala dresses that Isthmus women and men will wear during this magnificent celebration.
It’s worth mentioning that the Velas Isthmus celebration has a great capacity to attract visitors, not only attracting thousands of regional and national tourists to enjoy this unique experience, but also reaching across borders, bringing Oaxacan hearts to every corner of the world to join in this artistic and cultural expression, where tourists revel in all the folklore, color, dance, music, smells, and flavors that characterize them, sending their senses into ecstasy.
Finally, this celebration was given the name Vela Veintisiete to distinguish it from the other festivities that, in fraternal pride, give supreme prominence to the Velas de Septiembre (September Candles), which are held year after year in the city of Ixtepec.
From Sept. 26 to 30, local people can enjoy the various live activities scheduled for this magnificent spectacle in the Oaxacan region.
Tradición, folklore y sabor unidos en todo su esplendor
En honor al patrono de la comunidad de Ciudad Ixtepec, antes Villa de San Jerónimo, en la región de Istmo de Tehuantepec Oaxaca, los preparativos para la fiestas nocturnas denominadas Calendas están en todo apogeo previo a la gran celebración caracterizada por el tapiz multicolor formado por la luz de mechones y faroles y las actividades asociadas: la banda, el tradicional castillo, los cohetes, los toritos, y la bebida tradicional mistela (una mezcla de uva y mosto de aguardiente) que no puede faltar en un marco perfecto para la celebración de la Vela Veintisiete.
Es tradición legendaria de los socios fundadores, que año con año se elija a una mujer Istmeña para ser reina de esta festividad, su elección tiene un significado honorífico para quien portará corona y cetro, ya que lleva consigo la distinción de difundir y preservar herencia cultural de sus ancestros.
En este año 2025, el reinado estará a cargo de Daira Moreno López. Vale la pena mencionar que la elección de esta bella mujer Istmeña, se realizó de acuerdo al turno que le correspondía en la lista donde sus padres Ángel Moreno y Nora Cecilia López de Moreno, registraron el nombre de su hija desde el día de su nacimiento, para que llegado el momento fuera elegida reina, al igual que sus abuelos maternos, socios fundadores, inscribieron a la madre de Daira, Nora Cecilia Toledo, quien en su época, al igual que otras soberanas, también portó el legado de esta corona.
Si bien es cierto que la celebración de Vela Veintisiete es el marco perfecto para la coronación de la reina; también lo será para recibir la llegada del otoño, con un espectáculo sin igual cuyos ojos gozarán de la belleza y colorido de los bordados de los trajes de gala que mujeres y hombres Istmeños portarán en esta magna festividad.
Cabe mencionar que la celebración de las Velas istmeñas tienen una gran capacidad de convocatoria, ya que no solo atraen a miles de turistas regionales y nacionales a disfrutar de esta inigualable experiencia, sino que estas festividades ya han traspasado fronteras logrando con esto que en cualquier rincón del mundo donde existen corazones oaxaqueños se unan a esta expresión artística y cultural, en la cual los turistas recrean sus pupilas con todo el folklore, color, baile, música, olor y sabor que las caracteriza, haciendo volar de éxtasis sus sentidos.
Por último, se dio el nombre de Vela Veintisiete a esta celebración, con el fin de diferenciarla de las distintas festividades que en fraternal orgullo dan un supremo realce a la Velas de Septiembre, que año con año se llevan a cabo en la Ciudad Ixtepec.
Del 26 al 30 de septiembre ven a disfrutar en vivo de las diversas actividades programadas en este magno espectáculo de la Región Oaxaqueña.
