With the crisp autumn air setting in and the anticipation of Halloween and Día de los Muertos building, Dos Mundos returns to explore chilling legends from communities in the Greater Kansas City area. This time, we travel to a small town just west of the two Kansas Cities to uncover one of the region’s most unsettling and persistent tales — the legend of Stull Cemetery.
Nestled in the rural hills of Douglas County, Kansas, lies the unincorporated community of Stull.
At first glance, it’s easy to overlook. A scattering of houses. A country road. A cemetery perched quietly on a hill. But for decades, rumors have surrounded this quiet stretch of land — rumors that claim it’s home to one of the world’s seven gateways to Hell.
The legend centers on an old stone church that once stood atop the cemetery. Locals whispered that beneath its crumbling foundation lay a hidden staircase — one that descended into the underworld itself.
According to lore, Satan appears at this site twice a year — once on Halloween, once during the spring equinox. He allegedly passes through the portal to meet with the spirits of those buried nearby.
Some say a witch is buried in the cemetery, her grave unmarked and her story buried in secrecy. Others tell of a deformed child, said to be the offspring of Satan, whose body was hidden beneath the soil. The tales are as strange as they are enduring.
Visitors have long reported eerie experiences on the hill — sudden temperature drops, strange sounds, unsettling feelings of being watched. Some claim they’ve seen shadows move between headstones. Others have described hearing voices whispering from nowhere or finding that their watches stopped while walking through the grounds.
Over the years, the stories attracted thrill-seekers and curious travelers, especially around Halloween. But as vandalism and trespassing increased, local authorities fenced the cemetery and began enforcing strict no-trespassing rules. To this day, entry after dark is prohibited.
Despite skepticism from historians and locals alike, the stories haven’t faded. Rather, they’ve been passed down through generations, printed in student newspapers and whispered across campfires.
A popular myth claims that Pope John Paul II once diverted his flight path to avoid passing over Stull. The story has no confirmation, but it continues to add to the mystery.
What remains clear is this: Whether born from fear, folklore or fascination, the legend of Stull Cemetery has carved out a lasting place in Kansas lore.
So if you ever find yourself driving the backroads west of Lawrence, be cautious when passing the quiet hill at the edge of town. You might see nothing but gravestones and windblown grass. But some believe there’s far more hidden beneath the surface.

A simple vista, es fácil pasarla por alto. Unas cuantas casas dispersas. Un camino campestre. Un cementerio que descansa silenciosamente en una colina. Pero durante décadas, los rumores han rodeado este tranquilo paraje —rumores que aseguran que es el hogar de una de las siete puertas al infierno en el mundo.
