A staple in the Greater Kansas City area’s Hispanic community is closing soon.
La Fonda El Taquito recently announced it’s officially closing its doors on Jan. 31 after 47 years. For Maria Chaurand – who has run the business for the past 20 years along with her sister, Sandy Medina – the decision was hard but necessary.
“We work hard, we love it,” Chaurand said. “But we’re also very, very tired. And I’m 75 years old, so I’m ready to quit. My sister is about 11 years younger than I am, but she’s ready, too.”
Chaurand and her sister know how hard it is to run a business. Over the years, they’ve had to give up attending other community events in favor of La Fonda, so they weren’t surprised that their kids didn’t want to take up the mantle.
“None of our kids really wanted to come in and take over the business because it’s such a hard business,” she said. “You’re there 24/7 most of the time. “And it’s true – if it’s your business, you’ve got to take care of it, so that stuck in our brains.”
For decades, La Fonda was the place to be for many Hispanic families. Even until now, families come over because they used to when they were younger. Chaurand has seen kids grow into adults and families expand over time, she said.
Since the closing announcement, people have come in that haven’t visited in years to have one last taste and share their story with Chaurand.
“I’ve had people that have come in to honor their families because they used to eat there all the time, and they wanted just to come and eat because their mother passed away or their sister passed away and they used to love eating there,” she recalled. “Just incredible memories that you’re not aware of until something like this happens when we’re closing and everybody’s telling their story.”
The key to lasting success has been the consistency of the food, according to Chaurand. La Fonda was the first restaurant to offer carnitas tacos in the area, she said.
“I think we made dishes that people were familiar with from the community through our fiestas that we had back in the day, when we would make the tacos and the enchiladas and the burritos,” Chaurand said.
On Jan. 31, there will be a big party open to the public at La Fonda on 800 Southwest Blvd. in Kansas City, Missouri. More details will be provided closer to the date.
“We’re just going to have the bar, music, just to tell everybody goodbye,” Chaurand said.
Chaurand and her sister continued what their parents started in 1978 “out of love,” she said.
“I hope that the love that we showed by my sister’s cooking, by me being present and being the waitress, the bartender, whatever I needed to be, we did it out of love and because we loved our business,” Chaurand said. “I think my mom and dad would be very proud of us right now – how we left their restaurant, the legacy we left.”

Un establecimiento emblemático de la comunidad hispana del área metropolitana de Kansas City cerrará pronto.
La Fonda El Taquito anunció recientemente que cerrará oficialmente sus puertas el 31 de enero, después de 47 años. Para María Chaurand, quien ha dirigido el negocio durante los últimos 20 años junto con su hermana, Sandy Medina, la decisión fue difícil pero necesaria.
“Trabajamos mucho, nos encanta”, dijo Chaurand. “Pero también estamos muy, muy cansadas. Y tengo 75 años, así que estoy lista para jubilarme. Mi hermana es unos 11 años menor que yo, pero ella también está lista”.
Chaurand y su hermana saben lo difícil que es administrar un negocio. A lo largo de los años, han tenido que sacrificar su asistencia a otros eventos comunitarios para dedicarse a La Fonda, por lo que no les sorprendió que sus hijos no quisieran hacerse cargo del negocio.
“Ninguno de nuestros hijos quiso hacerse cargo del negocio porque es un negocio muy exigente”, dijo. “Estás ahí las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana, la mayor parte del tiempo. Y es cierto: si es tu negocio, tienes que cuidarlo, y eso se nos quedó grabado”.
Durante décadas, La Fonda fue el lugar predilecto para muchas familias hispanas. Incluso ahora, las familias siguen viniendo porque solían hacerlo cuando eran más jóvenes. Chaurand ha visto a los niños crecer y a las familias expandirse con el paso del tiempo, comentó.
Desde el anuncio del cierre, muchas personas que no habían visitado el restaurante en años han venido para disfrutar de una última comida y compartir sus historias con Chaurand.
“He visto a personas que han venido para honrar a sus familias porque solían comer aquí con frecuencia, y querían venir a comer una última vez porque su madre o su hermana habían fallecido y les encantaba comer aquí”, recordó. “Son recuerdos increíbles de los que no te das cuenta hasta que sucede algo como esto, cuando cerramos y todos comparten sus historias”.
La clave del éxito duradero ha sido la constancia en la calidad de la comida, según Chaurand. La Fonda fue el primer restaurante en ofrecer tacos de carnitas en la zona, afirmó.
“Creo que preparamos platillos que la gente conocía de la comunidad gracias a las fiestas que celebrábamos en el pasado, cuando preparábamos tacos, enchiladas y burritos”, dijo Chaurand.
El 31 de enero habrá una gran fiesta de despedida abierta al público en La Fonda, ubicada en 800 Southwest Blvd. en Kansas City, Missouri. Se darán más detalles más cerca de la fecha.
“Vamos a tener el bar abierto, música, solo para despedirnos de todos”, dijo.
Chaurand y su hermana continuaron con lo que sus padres comenzaron en 1978 “por amor”, dijo.
“Espero que el amor que demostramos a través de la cocina de mi hermana, de mi presencia como camarera, mesera, o lo que fuera necesario, se haya notado, porque lo hicimos con amor y porque amábamos nuestro negocio”, dijo Chaurand. “Creo que mis padres estarían muy orgullosos de nosotras en este momento, de cómo dejamos su restaurante, del legado que dejamos”.
