A new nonprofit is promoting higher education for women in Latin America by providing scholarships and mentorships.
That nonprofit is The Ella Initiative. Its goal is to support young women pursuing higher education in Latin America, founder Genesis Mercado said.
“There are certain barriers that limit those opportunities, and sometimes, you just need someone to give you an opportunity; and so that’s why we thought, me and the board, ‘Let’s go to places where a lot of opportunities don’t come to them,’” Mercado explained.
So far, the schools that are part of the initiative are in El Salvador — a place that’s dear to Mercado’s heart.
“The school where we distributed the first scholarship is the school where my mom grew up in El Salvador,” she explained. “She grew up in, like, a small town, which is, like, two hours away from the capital – from El Salvador – and so, as you can imagine, there’s not a lot of opportunities there.”
“It’s a more rural area, so we’re able to give these young women the funds they need in order to even, like, catch a bus … to their school,” Mercado added.
A native of Wichita, Kansas, Mercado also works as an immigration attorney in the Greater Kansas City area. Her parents came from El Salvador during the 1980s to escape the Salvadoran Civil War, she recounted.
“My parents and the women in my family, they always encouraged me to continue my education, and they pushed me and they made sure that I had what I needed in order to go to school and then continue on to law school,” Mercado said.
That experience led Mercado to create The Ella Initiative, she said.
“I started it because I was inspired by the strong women in my family and my community, but I also saw firsthand how education can change your life – it changed mine,” she said. “I wanted to create something that honored them and their legacy, and I wanted to continue that by paying it back and paying it forward to another young woman.”
Right now, the initiative works with two schools in El Salvador, but Mercado hopes to expand soon into Mexico. The biggest challenge is fundraising, because it’s not easy to fundraise for scholarships used overseas, she acknowledged.
“I wanted to make the connection and explain to people that, even though they are far away, we’re all connected; eventually, we’re going to feel the effects of what happens in El Salvador and what happens in Mexico – we’re all connected,” Mercado said. “If we can start by helping others, especially in their communities in Latin America, who knows what … changes … can happen in decades.”

Organización sin fines de lucro promueve la educación para mujeres latinoamericanas
Una organización sin fines de lucro está promoviendo la educación superior para mujeres en América Latina a través de becas y programas de mentoría.
Esta organización se llama The Ella Initiative. Su objetivo es apoyar a mujeres jóvenes que buscan acceder a la educación superior en América Latina, explicó su fundadora, Genesis Mercado.
“Existen ciertas barreras que limitan estas oportunidades, y a veces, solo se necesita que alguien te brinde una oportunidad; por eso, el consejo directivo y yo pensamos: ‘Vamos a lugares donde no suelen llegar muchas oportunidades’”, explicó Mercado.
Hasta el momento, las instituciones educativas que forman parte de la iniciativa se encuentran en El Salvador, un lugar muy especial para Mercado.
“La escuela donde otorgamos la primera beca es la escuela donde creció mi madre en El Salvador”, explicó. “Creció en un pueblo pequeño, a unas dos horas de la capital, San Salvador, y como pueden imaginar, no hay muchas oportunidades allí”.
“Es una zona más rural, así que podemos brindarles a estas jóvenes los fondos que necesitan incluso para tomar el autobús para ir a la escuela”, agregó Mercado.
“Mis padres y las mujeres de mi familia siempre me animaron a continuar mis estudios, me apoyaron y se aseguraron de que tuviera lo necesario para ir a la escuela y luego a la facultad de derecho”, dijo Mercado.
Esa experiencia la llevó a a crear The Ella Initiative, afirmó.
“Comencé esta iniciativa inspirada por las mujeres fuertes de mi familia y mi comunidad, pero también fui testigo de cómo la educación puede cambiar la vida de una persona; cambió la mía”, dijo. “Quería crear algo que las honrara a ellas y a su legado, y quería continuar ese legado retribuyendo y brindando oportunidades a otras jóvenes”.
Actualmente, la iniciativa trabaja con dos escuelas en El Salvador, pero Mercado espera expandirse pronto a México. El mayor desafío es la recaudación de fondos, ya que no es fácil conseguir financiación para becas en el extranjero, reconoció.
“Quería establecer la conexión y explicarle a la gente que, aunque estén lejos, todos estamos conectados; tarde o temprano, sentiremos los efectos de lo que sucede en El Salvador y en México; todos estamos conectados”, dijo Mercado. “Si podemos empezar ayudando a otros, especialmente en sus comunidades en América Latina, quién sabe qué cambios pueden ocurrir en las próximas décadas”.
