A staple in the Greater Kansas City area’s Hispanic community is celebrating a milestone.
This year, El Centro Inc. is celebrating its 50th anniversary of serving the community. In October, the anniversary month, the center will host a gala.
Because of the COVID pandemic, the nonprofit organization couldn’t celebrate its 45th anniversary, so the idea was to celebrate big for the 50th anniversary, explained Erica Andrade, El Centro president and chief executive officer. But the current situation with immigrants nationwide cast doubts over the celebration plans, Andrade said.
“At the end of the day, as a Latino community, when we’re put in these situations where we’re feeling like we’re being targeted or the world feels like it’s against us almost, we come together to celebrate,” she said during a recent interview. “We keep living, we keep pushing forward.”
That’s what prompted El Centro’s model for celebration: joy is resistance.
“It’s one of those things that they can’t take from us,” Andrade said. “They can’t take everything that we’ve accomplished. They can’t take the families that we’ve served and the services that we’ve been able to do in the community for 50 years and all the people that have come and gone to help El Centro be (what) it is now as well.”
Andrade said the idea is to do other events as October gets near, including events for Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15). During the summer, El Centro hopes to host an alumni event, she said.
“That would be for all our past employees that have come through El Centro over the last 50 years … (as) just a time to come together and just celebrate ourselves and the work that we’ve done,” Andrade said.
But the celebrations started last year. Around the time the one-year countdown for the anniversary began, El Centro launched its Latinos in Kansas Community Assessment for the State of Kansas initiative.
“That’s something that we’re going to be working on all year, at the same time, with representatives from all across the state, all the way from western Kansas to central Kansas to here, to really do a really comprehensive community assessment on Latinos in Kansas,” she said. “So by the time that we have our celebration, we’ll start already having some of the data synthesized to have some summary points to start putting out, and then by the end of the year and into the next year, which will start our next 50 years, being able to come up with a full report.”
The report also will include recommendations and policy action items to mobilize people across Kansas. Andrade is proud of the endeavor because it has been frustrating when trying to get data about Latinos in the state and coming up empty most of the time, she said.
“Even if we can’t find funding for it, even if we have to pay for it ourselves, it’s important because Latinos in Kansas matter, too,” Andrade said. “And we have our own stories and our own data that we think other states can learn from and grow from. So we’re just going to do it ourselves. We don’t have to wait for other people to do it for us. We could do it ourselves.”

El Centro se prepara para celebrar su aniversario no. 50
Un pilar de la comunidad hispana del área metropolitana de Kansas City celebra un hito.
Este año, El Centro Inc. celebra su 50.º aniversario sirviendo a la comunidad. En octubre, mes del aniversario, el centro ofrecerá una gala.
Debido a la pandemia del COVID, la organización sin fines de lucro no pudo celebrar su aniversario no. 45, por lo que la idea era celebrar a lo grande, explicó Erica Andrade, presidenta y directora ejecutiva de El Centro. Sin embargo, la situación actual con los inmigrantes en todo el país puso en duda los planes de celebración, dijo.
“Al final, como comunidad latina, cuando nos encontramos en situaciones en las que sentimos que nos están atacando o que el mundo está prácticamente en nuestra contra, nos unimos para celebrar”, dijo durante una entrevista reciente. “Seguimos viviendo, seguimos adelante”.
Eso es lo que impulsó el modelo de celebración de El Centro: la alegría es resistencia.
“Es una de esas cosas que no nos pueden quitar”, dijo Andrade. “No nos pueden quitar todo lo que hemos logrado. No nos pueden quitar a las familias a las que hemos servido ni los servicios que hemos prestado en la comunidad durante 50 años, ni a todas las personas que han contribuido a que El Centro sea lo que es ahora”.
Andrade comentó que la idea es realizar otros eventos a medida que se acerca octubre, incluyendo eventos para el Mes de la Herencia Hispana (del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre). Durante el verano, El Centro espera organizar un evento para exalumnos, añadió.
“Eso sería para todos nuestros antiguos empleados que han pasado por El Centro durante los últimos 50 años… como un momento para reunirnos y celebrarnos a nosotros mismos y el trabajo que hemos realizado”, dijo Andrade.
Pero las celebraciones ya comenzaron el año pasado. Casi al mismo tiempo que comenzaba la cuenta regresiva de un año para el aniversario, El Centro lanzó su iniciativa de Evaluación Comunitaria de Latinos en Kansas para el Estado de Kansas.
“Es algo en lo que trabajaremos todo el año, al mismo tiempo, con representantes de todo el estado, desde el oeste de Kansas hasta el centro de Kansas, para realizar una evaluación comunitaria exhaustiva sobre los latinos en Kansas”, dijo. “Para cuando tengamos nuestra celebración, ya tendremos algunos datos sintetizados para tener algunos puntos de resumen que publicar, y luego, para finales de año y el próximo, que marcará el inicio de nuestros próximos 50 años, podremos elaborar un informe completo”.
El informe también incluirá recomendaciones y medidas políticas para movilizar a la gente de Kansas. Andrade se enorgullece de la iniciativa, ya que ha sido frustrante intentar obtener datos sobre los latinos en el estado y no obtener resultados la mayor parte del tiempo, afirmó.
“Aunque no podamos encontrar financiación, incluso si tenemos que pagarlo nosotros mismos, es importante porque los latinos en Kansas también importan”, afirmó Andrade. “Y tenemos nuestras propias historias y datos de los que creemos que otros estados pueden aprender y crecer. Así que lo haremos nosotros mismos. No tenemos que esperar a que otros lo hagan por nosotros. Podríamos hacerlo nosotros mismos”.
