The Consulate of Mexico in Kansas City, Missouri, is revamping its office space by exalting Mexican culture on its walls.
The consulate has launched a mural program. An initiative created by Head Consul Soileh Padilla Mayer, the program aims to turn the space of consular offices into a space of art and culture. To accomplish that, the consulate has invited artists to paint a mural inside each office.
“The intention is that, when the nationals visit the consulate, they can get to know part of the heritage and Mexican culture through the murals,” said Carime Barroso, who’s in charge of cultural affairs at the consulate.
Nine offices will have art on their walls. Artists who have already created their murals include Pedro Trueba, Vicente Medellin, Mauricio Zuniga (Zuñiga in Spanish), Giselle Garza and Hugo Ximello. There are three other works in progress.
“The truth is that it is a program that has had very good acceptance,” Barroso said. “We are very happy and proud that artists … have joined this program with the intention of being able to celebrate culture, and each one has a different meaning. Each office has a different theme, obviously different colors, and it’s very personal touch of the artist.”
Barroso said the consulate looks to have a public inauguration for the murals under the framework of Independence Day in September. From then on, the cultural space in the consulate will be open during community events such as First Fridays, so people can see the mural work, she said.
“It is art to share, art to enjoy and art for local artists who want to transcend through their art and through voluntary work, which is also impressive,” Barroso said.
More information about the inauguration will be available closer to September.
Consulado de México trabaja en programa de murales
El Consulado de México en Kansas City, Missouri, está renovando sus oficinas para exaltar la cultura mexicana en sus paredes.
El consulado ha lanzado un programa de murales. Una iniciativa de la Cónsul Jefa Soileh Padilla Mayer, el programa busca convertir las oficinas consulares en un espacio de arte y cultura. Para lograrlo, el consulado ha invitado a artistas a pintar un mural dentro de cada oficina.
“La intención es que, cuando los connacionales visiten el consulado, puedan conocer parte del patrimonio y la cultura mexicana a través de los murales”, dijo Carime Barroso, encargada de asuntos culturales del consulado.
Nueve oficinas lucirán arte en sus paredes. Entre los artistas que ya han creado sus murales se encuentran Pedro Trueba, Vicente Medellín, Mauricio Zúñiga, Giselle Garza y Hugo Ximello. Hay otras tres obras en proceso.
“La verdad es que es un programa que ha tenido muy buena aceptación”, dijo Barroso. “Estamos muy contentos y orgullosos de que los artistas… se hayan unido a este programa con la intención de celebrar la cultura, y cada uno tiene un significado diferente. Cada oficina tiene una temática distinta, obviamente colores diferentes, y es un toque muy personal del artista”.
Barroso comentó que el consulado planea realizar una inauguración pública de los murales en el marco del Día de la Independencia en septiembre. A partir de entonces, el espacio cultural del consulado estará abierto durante eventos comunitarios como los Primeros Viernes, para que la gente pueda ver los murales, añadió.
“Es arte para compartir, arte para disfrutar y arte para artistas locales que buscan trascender a través de su arte y del trabajo voluntario, lo cual también es impresionante”, dijo Barroso.
