The 18th & Vine Historic District in Kansas City, Mo., opened a public art opportunity tied to its sweeping Revive the Vine initiative.
The City of KCMO is opening a call to artists for a permanent public artwork at the new 18th & Lydia Parking Garage.
Artists or artist teams should be based in the Kansas City area to apply. The selected artist will design, fabricate and install a permanent wall artwork on the north part of the garage, within a space measuring 29 feet high by 20 feet wide.
According to a news release from the City of KCMO, the project is founded by by the One Percent for Art Program and maximum budget for the commission is $165,000.
Two to five semifinalists will be selected to advance to the Request for Proposals phase and will receive a $2,775 stipend to develop design proposals.
Artists interested in applying must submit their application using the CaFÉ platform by 11:59 p.m. Central on Monday, April 6, 2026.
The new parking structure is part of a $20 million project to reconstruct the existing surface lot at 18th Street and Lydia Avenue. The garage is a of Revive the Vine proposal, a $400 million public and private reinvestment effort with the purpose of restoring cultural landmarks, expanding housing, improving walkability in the historic Jazz District.
Private developer Grayson Capital is building multi-family housing around the garage, In addition, private partners are planning new housing, retail, cultural venues and a reimagined Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and hotel.
Also, the city is leading several projects in the area including a pedestrian plaza along 18th St., streetscape upgrades on The Paseo, renovations to Blues Park and ADA improvements in surrounding neighborhoods.
