Longtime police officer Octavio “Chato” Villalobos is retiring soon.
After 26 years, Villalobos will retire in May from the Kansas City (Missouri) Police Department. His last day is set for May 21, when his retirement ceremony takes place.
“I just decided that I’ve given them everything I could give them and I’m ready (to retire),” Villalobos said. “I knew a long time ago that I didn’t want to leave when I was tired of it. I didn’t want to leave when I was angry or mad or having any type of contempt for this police department.”
Villalobos will miss his work, he acknowledged.
“I know I’m going to miss the different people that I worked with, the different supervisors that I worked for, the different elements on the police department that helped me just succeed along the way,” he said. “This police department has allowed me to do a lot of things in the Latino community in particular; and they supported me and encouraged me to do those types of programming where we build relationships in the Latino community, and so, I’m very grateful for that.”
Villalobos doesn’t have any post-retirement plans yet, but he knows he’s “not going to stay retired.”
“I do know that I still have a drive to contribute,” Villalobos said. “So I know I’m going to take probably a month off and just be with my family in the summer, take a breather, take a break before I transition to something else.”
Until his retirement, Villalobos plans to continue fulfilling his duties as police officer and expressing his gratitude to those who partnered with him during his career. He expects to have considerable work during his remaining time, especially as the department prepares for the men’s World Cup this summer.
“Being a police officer in this city and working specifically in these communities has been a blessing and I am eternally grateful to all the people who allowed me to be a part of the work they’re doing in the communities,” Villalobos said. “So many collaborations that I’m grateful for, and I think they are the reason that I have had success and been recognized for my work … and I just want to make sure (to) let them know I’m eternally grateful to them.”

El veterano oficial de policía Octavio “Chato” Villalobos se jubilará pronto.
Tras 26 años de servicio, Villalobos se jubilará en mayo del Departamento de Policía de Kansas City (Missouri). Su último día de trabajo está programado para el 21 de mayo, fecha en la que se llevará a cabo su ceremonia de retiro.
“Simplemente decidí que ya les he dado todo lo que podía darles y que estoy listo [para jubilarme]”, comentó Villalobos. “Sabía desde hace mucho tiempo que no quería irme cuando estuviera cansado de esto. No quería marcharme estando enojado, molesto o sintiendo algún tipo de desprecio hacia este departamento de policía”.
Villalobos admitió que extrañará su trabajo.
“Sé que voy a extrañar a las distintas personas con las que trabajé, a los diversos supervisores bajo cuyas órdenes estuve, y a los diferentes elementos del departamento de policía que me ayudaron a tener éxito a lo largo de este camino”, afirmó. “Este departamento de policía me ha permitido realizar muchas actividades, particularmente dentro de la comunidad latina; me brindaron su apoyo y me alentaron a llevar a cabo ese tipo de programas con los que construimos relaciones en la comunidad latina, por lo cual estoy sumamente agradecido”.
Villalobos aún no tiene planes para después de su jubilación, pero sabe que “no se quedará jubilado”.
“Lo que sí sé es que todavía tengo el impulso de seguir contribuyendo”, afirmó Villalobos. “Por eso sé que probablemente me tomaré un mes libre para simplemente estar con mi familia durante el verano, tomar un respiro y descansar antes de pasar a otra cosa”.
Hasta el momento de su jubilación, Villalobos planea seguir cumpliendo con sus deberes como oficial de policía y expresar su gratitud a quienes colaboraron con él a lo largo de su carrera. Anticipa tener una carga de trabajo considerable durante el tiempo que le queda, especialmente mientras el departamento se prepara para la Copa Mundial masculina de este verano.
“Ser oficial de policía en esta ciudad, y trabajar específicamente en estas comunidades, ha sido una bendición; estoy eternamente agradecido con todas las personas que me permitieron formar parte de la labor que realizan en sus comunidades”, dijo Villalobos. “Hubo muchísimas colaboraciones por las que me siento agradecido, y creo que son la razón de mi éxito y de que se haya reconocido mi trabajo… y simplemente quiero asegurarme de hacerles saber que les estoy eternamente agradecido”.
