Estados Unidos vivió este domingo en Orlando (Florida) uno de sus capítulos más oscuros. Un hombre de 29 años abrió fuego en una discoteca gay, matando al menos a 49 personas e hiriendo a otras 53. Es el peor tiroteo múltiple registrado en la historia del país. Los indicios apuntan a un único tirador, murió abatido por la policía. El atacante, identificado como Omar Siddique Mateen, era un ciudadano estadounidense de padres afganos. El Estado Islámico (ISIS, por sus siglas en inglés) asumió la autoría del ataque, pero las autoridades estadounidenses señalan que no hay pruebas que respalden una conexión directa entre el grupo y el ataque. El presidente Barack Obama calificó la masacre como un “acto de terrorismo y odio”.
Fuentes de la investigación citadas por varios medios estadounidenses apuntan que el atacante habría llamado al número de emergencia 911 poco antes de la masacre para declarar su lealtad al Estado Islámico. Horas después del ataque, el grupo asumió la autoría del mismo en un boletín emitido por su agencia informativa Amaq. Los investigadores señalan que, de momento, no hay ninguna indicación de que la organización terrorista haya entrenado o dirigido al asaltante.
El padre del tirador, Mir Saddique, dijo a la cadena NBC que no cree que el ataque protagonizado por su hijo se deba a motivos religiosos sino a motivaciones homófobas. “No tiene nada que ver con la religión”, dijo Saddique, que aseguró que su hijo se indignó hace dos meses cuando, durante una visita a Miami, vio a dos hombres besándose.

This is the worst mass shooting ever recorded in the history of the country. Evidence shows that there was only one shooter, who was killed by police. The aggressor, identified as Omar Siddique Mateen, was an American citizen whose parents are immigrants from Afghanistan. The Islamic State (ISIS), assumed responsibility for the attack, but US officials point out that there is not enough evidence to confirm a direct connection between the group and the attack. President Barack Obama called the massacre an “act of terrorism and hate”. Investigative resources quoted by several news media point out, that the aggressor had called 911 a few moments before the shooting to declare his loyalty to the Islamic State. Hours after the attack, the group claimed responsibility, in a bulletin issued by the news agency Amaq. Investigators say that, at the moment, there is no indication that the terriorist organization had trained or directed the shooter.
The shooter’s father, Mir Saddique, told the NBC network that he does not believe that the attack made by his son was due to religious motives but because of homophobic reasons.
“It has nothing to do with religion”, said Saddique, who stated that his son was upset two months ago during a visit to Miami when he saw two men kissing.
