Open Spaces 2018 is underway.
The nine-week arts experience opened on Aug. 25 at the Village in Swope Park, starting with a performance from the StoneLion Puppet Theatre, a Kansas City area theater company focused on providing high-quality local children’s theater. After the performance that entertained children and adults alike, people behind the idea, including Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Sly James, founder Scott Francis and artistic director Dan Cameron, gave brief speeches before cutting the ribbon to officially open the event.
Francis said this kind of event has been planned over the last decade. He thanked the donors and the city for partnering up with him during his speech. He also shared his excitement about the next 62 days of Open Spaces.
Cameron, who has organized numerous biennials and other arts exhibitions around the world, said he was entrusted to “use art to create a portrait” of Kansas City, so that the citizens can look at themselves through art.
“What I’ve tried to present you is a dynamically diverse Kansas City, full of artists, full of energy and united,” he said.
In his speech, Mayor James agreed that Open Spaces should be an event that unites people.
“Art is the soul of the people in this city,” James said. “This is a place for us to come together, unite.”
He continued, saying the event is an “effort of love” to highlight Kansas City’s arts, culture and creativity.
“We wanted to show the people of Kansas City that we can get together around something and this is the something we can get together around,” the mayor said.
Although the event will take place at multiple spots throughout Kansas City, the main hub will be in Swope Park.
“We chose Swope Park because (it) sits on that line where one side of the city and the other side of the city can come together,” James said.
Open Spaces 2018 is a collaboration effort between the Kansas City Office of Culture and Creative Services and a private arts initiative led by Francis.
The event will run through Oct. 28, with performances and exhibitions happening around the city and in Swope Park every day. For more information on the artists and a full schedule, visit openspaceskc.com.

Open Spaces 2018 está en marcha.
La experiencia artística de nueve semanas inició el 25 de agosto en la Villa (the Village) de Swope Park, con la actuación de StoneLion Puppet Theatre, una compañía teatral del área de Kansas City enfocada en brindar un teatro infantil local de alta calidad. Después de la actuación que entretuvo a niños y adultos, las personas detrás de la idea, incluyendo el alcalde de Kansas City, Missouri Sly James, fundador Scott Francis y el director artístico Dan Cameron, dieron discursos breves antes de cortar la cinta para, oficialmente, dar inicio al evento.
Francis dijo que este tipo de evento ha sido planeado por una década. En su discurso agradeció a los donantes y a la ciudad por trabajar con él. También compartió su emoción sobre los siguientes 62 días de Open Spaces.
Cameron, quien ha organizado numerosas bienales y otras exhibiciones de arte alrededor del mundo, dijo que le confiaron “usar el arte para crear un retrato” de Kansas City, para que los ciudadanos puedan mirarse a través del arte.
“Lo que traté de presentarles es una Kansas City dinámicamente diversa, llena de artistas, llena de energía y unida”, dijo.
En su discurso, el alcalde James estuvo de acuerdo con la idea de que Open Spaces debería ser un evento que una a la gente.
“El arte es el alma de la gente en esta ciudad”, dijo James. “Este es el lugar para unirnos”.
Continuó diciendo que el evento es un “esfuerzo de amor” para resaltar las artes, cultura y creatividad de Kansas City.
“Queríamos mostrarle a la gente de Kansas City que nos podemos unir detrás de algo, y este es el algo atrás de lo que nos podemos unir”, explicó.
Aunque el evento tendrá lugar en varios puntos de Kansas City, el centro principal será en Swope Park.
“Escogimos Swope Park porque está en esa línea donde un lado de la ciudad y el otro lado de la ciudad se pueden unir”, James dijo.
Open Spaces 2018 es un esfuerzo colaborativo entre la Oficina de Cultura y Servicios Creativos de Kansas City y una iniciativa de artes privada dirigida por Francis.
