Local students start community garden

FSI students growing a community garden

On Monday (May 4), the Frontier School of Innovation (FSI) and KC Community Gardens partnered to provide an opportunity for students to work as a team and learn about gardening.

“We teamed up to create a way to collaborate with the community surrounding our school,” said Jennifer Ortiz, FSI second-grade teacher and event organizer. “We explored many opportunities, but the idea of a community garden seemed to be a wonderful addition to the FSI community.”

During the year, students will continue to hone their gardening skills by planting, growing and harvesting various vegetables, including cucumbers, peppers, squash, sweet potatoes and tomatoes. Third-graders will construct the garden and students in grades K-3 will tend to it each day.

FSI plans to keep working in events like Monday’s gardening day throughout the year, according to Ortiz.

“It is important to organize these kinds of events so our students can feel a sense of community and see the results of their hard work and dedication,” Ortiz stated.

The community garden is located behind the elementary school, located at 6700 Corporate Drive in Kansas City, Mo.
