El deseo de ayudar a la gente siempre ha jugado un papel importante en la vida de Jackie Melgosa.
Melgosa, que trabaja con una organización en Kansas City, Mo., sin fines de lucro, ReStart Inc., siempre estuvo motivada a ayudar a aquellos que necesitan más ayuda cuando crecía en el área de Westside, en Missouri como la menor de siete hermanos. Fue allí que ella asistió a una iglesia católica y vio a sus padres involucrándose en la comunidad.
“Mis padres eran – y siguen siendo – muy activos,” dijo Melgosa. “Siempre ayudaron en la iglesia y en la zona Westside. He recibido mucha motivación y apoyo por parte de ellos – y vi la importancia de retribuir a la comunidad, para ayudar a aquellos que no tienen nada o están comenzando una vida en otro país.”
Melgosa obtuvo una carrera en psicología de la Universidad de Missouri- Kansas City y una maestría en psicología y trabajo social de una universidad en Nueva York. Si bien, durante su maestría , trabajó para varias organizaciones que ayudaron a las personas llegadas de América Central y del Sur que no sabían acerca de la cultura americana.
“He trabajado con comunidades muy pobres, ayudando a los inmigrantes y los pobres,” recordó. “Han habido muchas historias de gente que viene (a Estados Unidos) sin hablar Inglés, sin conocer el sistema, sin saber cómo encontrar un trabajo y … (sin saber) cómo o por dónde empezar.”
Finalmente, Melgosa regresó al área de Kansas City y comenzó a trabajar para reStart, una organización que ayuda a las personas sin hogar a comenzar una nueva vida. La organización cuenta con un centro donde las personas sin hogar puede permanecer hasta que puedan vivir por su cuenta; también ayuda a superar las adicciones que las personas puedan tener.
“Mi trabajo consiste en ayudar a las personas con adicción a las drogas y el alcohol mientras están en el centro,” dijo. “Cada semana , tenemos programas para ver que adicciones tienen y así poder comenzar un tratamiento.”
Según Melgosa, la mejor manera de empezar a ayudar a las personas es escuchar sus historias y comprender de dónde vienen, incluyendo sus problemas y lo que han experimentado.
“ La historia más impactante para mí fue un hombre que venía de Colombia,” dijo. “Él estaba en sus 60 o 70 años y no tenía nada, ni siquiera ( una comprensión de ) el idioma (Inglés) . Además de eso, tenía problemas de alcoholismo … Le ayudé con eso – y encontramos la manera para ayudarlo y darle alimentos y sobrevivir en la ciudad.”
Melgosa también es miembro de la junta directiva de una asociación de la justicia social en Missouri que tiene como objetivo educar a la gente sobre temas sociales. Ella también es miembro de Trabajo para la Justicia, una organización que se ocupa de cuestiones de salario mínimo.
Melgosa giving back to the community

The desire to help people has always played an important part in Jackie Melgosa’s life.
Melgosa, who works with the Kansas City, Mo.-based non-profit organization reStart Inc., was motivated to help those who need the most help while growing up as the youngest of seven in Kansas City, Mo.’s Westside area. It was there that she attended a Catholic church and saw her parents get involved in the community.
“My parents were – and are still – very active,” Melgosa said. “We always helped in the church and (in) the Westside area. I received a lot of motivation and support from them – and I saw the importance of giving back to the community, to help those who don’t have anything or are starting a life in another country.”
Melgosa went on to get a psychology degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a master’s degree in psychology and social work from a university in New York. While pursuing her master’s degree, she worked for various organizations that helped arrivals from Central and South America who didn’t know about American culture.
“I worked with very poor communities, helping immigrants and poor people,” she recalled. “There have been many stories of people coming (to America) without speaking English, without knowing the system, without knowing how to find a job and … (not knowing) how to or where to start.”
Eventually, Melgosa returned to the Kansas City area and began working for reStart, an organization that helps homeless people start new lives. The organization has a center where the homeless can stay until they can live on their own. It also helps them get through any addictions they might have.
“My job is to help people with drug and alcohol addiction while they are in the center,” she said. “Every week, we have programs to see what addictions they have so we can start treatment.”
According to Melgosa, the best way to start helping people is to hear their stories and understand where they’re coming from, including their problems and what they’ve experienced.
“The most striking story for me was a man who came from Colombia,” she said. “He was … (in) his 60s or 70s and didn’t have anything, not even (an understanding of) the (English) language. On top of that, he had alcoholism problems…. I helped him with that – and we found help to provide him with food and survive in the city.”
Melgosa also is a board member of a social justice association in Missouri that aims to educate people about social issues. She also is a member of Work for Justice, an organization that addresses minimum wage issues.
