Dos terroristas asociados con el Estado islámico (ISIS) asesinaron a un sacerdote católico el 26 de julio en la iglesia St.-Etienne-du-Rovray, Francia.
De acuerdo con los reportes de noticias, dos jóvenes entraron a la Iglesia gritando, “Allahu Akbar” durante la misa matutina, y tomaron como rehenes al sacerdote y otros. Varios testigos declararon que los terroristas tomaron al sacerdote y lo forzaron a que se pusiera de rodillas en el altar. Los terroristas empezaron a hablar en árabe mientras lo asesinaban. Los oficiales de la policía francesa les dispararon a los dos terroristas cuando éstos salían de la Iglesia.
Horas después del ataque, ISIS tomó la responsabilidad del asesinato. ISIS entregó una declaración diciendo que los ejecutores del ataque eran soldados de ISIS. Uno de los atacantes fue identificado como Adel Kermiche, quien había sido arrestado anteriormente y estuvo 10 meses arrestado.
El ataque ha provocado censura por parte de los líderes franceses y católicos. El presidente francés, Francois Hollande, fue citado en The Wall Street Journal: “Asesinar a un sacerdote es como profanar la república, la cual garantiza la libertad de religión”.
De acuerdo con diferentes medios de noticias, Hollande tuvo una conversación telefónica con el papa Francisco, prometiendo que su gobierno protegería a los sacerdotes, las iglesias y otros lugares sagrados.
El Vaticano llamó el ataque un “asesinato salvaje” y dijo que el lugar del crimen lo empeoró. El Papa Francisco consideró que el asesinato del reverendo Jacques Hamel es la consecuencia de un mundo en guerra.
“El mundo está en guerra porque ha perdido la paz”, CNN citó al Papa. “Existe una guerra de interés. Existe una guerra para el dinero, una guerra para recursos naturales, una guerra para dominar a la gente. Algunos quizás piensen que es guerra de religión, pero no es así. Las religiones desean la paz”.

Terrorists kill priest in France

Two Islamic State (ISIS)-associated terrorists killed a Catholic priest on July 26 at a church St.-Etienne-du-Rovray, France.
According to news reports, two young people entered the church shouting, “Allahu Akbar” during morning Mass, and took the priest and others hostage. Several witnesses stated the terrorists took the priest and made him kneel on the altar. The terrorists started speaking in Arabic while they killed him. French police officers shot the two terrorists while they exited the church.
Hours after the attack, ISIS claimed responsibility for it. ISIS released a statement saying that the executors of the attack had been ISIS soldiers. One attacker was identified as Adel Kermiche, who had been arrested before and served 10 months in detention.
The attack has drawn condemnations from French and Catholic leaders. French President Francois Hollande was quoted in The Wall Street Journal as saying, “Killing a priest is like desecrating the republic, which guarantees religious freedom.”
According to various news outlets, Hollande had a phone conversation with Pope Francis, pledging his government would protect priests, and churches and other sacred places.
The Vatican called the attack a “barbarous killing” and said the site of the crime made it worse. Pope Francis considered the killing of the Rev. Jacques Hamel to be a consequence of a world at war.
“The world is at war because it has lost peace,” the pope was quoted by CNN as saying. “There is a war of interest. There is a war for money, a war for natural resources, a war to dominate people. Some might think it is war of religion. It is not. All religions want peace.”
