Mary Lou Jaramillo y Mary Estrada están trabajando juntas para tratar de ayudar a las latinas de diversas profesiones que viven en Johnson County, Kan.
En agosto de 2015, Jaramillo y Estrada fundaron el Johnson County Latina Leadership Network. El grupo, que celebró su reunión más reciente el 20 de junio en la biblioteca de Johnson County, está diseñado para reunir a las latinas a ampliar sus conocimientos sobre Johnson County y oportunidades de participación de la comunidad. También está diseñado para ayudar a las latinas a aprender acerca de las diversas profesiones de las mujeres dentro del grupo y tener un círculo de influencia, según Estrada.
“En primer lugar, nos estamos conectando uno al otro — y no hay ninguna organización que lo está haciendo para nosotros, por eso lo estamos haciendo nosotros mismos,” dijo Jaramillo.
Su decisión de iniciar la red se produjo después de años de ver la falta de las latinas en reuniones de negocios. También surgió de una idea errónea de muchos que no son hispanos tienen acerca de las latinas en general.
“Hay una suposición de que porque somos latinos/hispanos que ‘sabemos’ mutuamente o qué ‘sabemos’ estos grupos (por ejemplo, el fondo de desarrollo de hispanos) y nosotros no sabemos,” dijo Jaramillo.
En la reunión de junio, había alrededor de 25 mujeres, con más de la mitad de los cuales son nuevos en el grupo. Cada mujer trajo una perspectiva diferente nivel profesional como personal. Las mujeres representaban una multitud de orígenes étnicos, entre ellos Colombia, México y Venezuela. Sus profesiones incluyen el trabajo empresarial, los bienes raíces, el trabajo sin fines de lucro y el interiorismo. También habia muchos voluntarios.
“Somos voluntarios, estamos evolucionando,” dijo Estrada. “Los objetivos de este grupo … (son) a facultar a las latinas para realizar conexiones y ayudamos unos a otros.”
El Johnson County Latina Leadership Network se reune mensualmente en varios lugares en Johnson County. Las agendas de las reuniones varían; sin embargo, las reuniones por lo general consisten de discusiones con respecto a las oportunidades de voluntariado, participación de la comunidad, junto con las presentaciones de los grupos cívicos y líderes de la comunidad.
Empezaron con 40 nombres en su lista de distribución de invitación de grupo, el grupo ha crecido para incluir a aproximadamente 98 mujeres, según Jaramillo. La red es exclusiva de las latinas que viven en el condado de Johnson. Su enfoque es deja a criterio de sus miembros.

Group working to help JoCo Latina professionals

Mary Lou Jaramillo and Mary Estrada are working together to try to help Latinas of various professions who live in Johnson County, Kan.
In August 2015, Jaramillo and Estrada co-founded the Johnson County Latina Leadership Network. The group, which held its most recent meeting on June 20 at the Johnson County Library, is designed to bring together Latinas to expand their knowledge about Johnson County and community involvement opportunities. It’s also designed to help Latinas learn about the various professions from the women within the group and to have a circle of influence overall, according to Estrada.
“First of all, we’re connecting to each other – and there’s no organization doing that for us, so we’re doing it ourselves,” Jaramillo said.
Their decision to start the network came after years of seeing the lack of Latinas at business meetings. It also stemmed from a misconception many non-Hispanics have about Latinas in general.
“There’s an assumption that because we’re Latinos/Hispanic that we ‘know’ each other or that we ‘know’ these groups (example, the Hispanic Development Fund) and we don’t,” Jaramillo stated.
At the June meeting, there were about 25 women, with more than half of them being new to the group. Each woman brought a different perspective professionally and personally. The women represented a multitude of ethnic backgrounds, including Colombian, Mexican and Venezuelan. Their professions included entrepreneurial work, real estate, non-profit work and interior design. There also were many volunteers.
“We’re volunteers, we’re evolving,” Estrada said. “This group’s goals … (are) simply to empower Latinas to make connections and to help one another.”
The Johnson County Latina Leadership Network meets monthly at various locations throughout Johnson County. The meeting agendas vary; however, the meetings usually consist of discussions regarding volunteer opportunities, community involvement, along with presentations from civic groups and community leaders.
Starting with 40 names on its group invitation distribution list, the group has grown to include approximately 98 women, according to Jaramillo. The network is exclusive to Latinas living in Johnson County. Its focus is left up to its members.
