How to make your children’s flu shot visits less stressful

Commentary by Melissa Arroyo

The annual flu shot visit, often dreaded by children, is right around the corner.
If your children have a difficult time getting vaccinated, a flu shot visit can become stressful, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Take the following tips into consideration before, during and after you visit the clinic:
*Before: Preparation before the visit is important. Ensure that your kids are mentally prepared by letting them see their visit as a way to stay healthy during the fall and winter. Moreover, be sure to read any information provided by your doctor to know what to expect during the visit and make sure you have your children’s immunization records handy.
*During: Be honest with your children by letting them know what the procedure will be like – and that they might feel a slight pinch on their arm. To put them at ease, bring their favorite books or toys. Be sure to be relaxed and positive during the visit.
*After: Have a calm, reassuring voice after your children have received all their shots. On the way out, compliment your children for doing a good job during the visit. If time allows, take them on a surprise trip to the park.
If the session doesn’t go accordingly, remind your kid why such visits are important and give them compliments for being brave, even though it might have been a scary experience at first. Your attitude will help make sure they do a better job during future visits.
