Making art and art education offer children many benefits

Commentary by Chara
It’s important that children develop their motor and imagination skills as they’re growing up. Parents can help children achieve those goals by encouraging children to make and learn about art.
In recent years, research has shown that art has important, positive physiological effects on children. It’s also been shown to encourage the development of motor skills and problem-solving. For example, according to research conducted by Michigan State University, children who are exposed to art learn how to think outside the box because working with one’s hands involves figuring out how to solve problems creatively.
A recent news story from PBS supports the Michigan State findings by stating that art education helps develop decision-making and critical thinking skills. In other words, children who explore and create tend to make decisions easier and are more self-confident than children who haven’t been exposed to art.
So if your children are interested in learning about art, encourage them. By holding a paintbrush or by drawing, they’ll develop their motor skills. They’ll also learn new words, shapes and actions.
To incorporate art into your child’s life, try the following tips:

*Give your child the proper materials: Make sure your child has pencils, colors, paper and crayons. All of the material should be appropriate to your child’s age.
*Talk to your child about art: For example, talk to your child about the art you see each day. Notice the pieces of art that are around you and talk about them.
*Enroll your child in art classes, if your child is interested in art: By attending classes, your child will expand his or her creativity and imagination.

Have fun as you encourage your children to explore the world of art – and expand their motor skills and broaden their minds.
