Dos Mundos celebrating 36 years

By Paula Alzate

This month, Dos Mundos is proudly celebrating 36 years of serving the Hispanic community.
Clara Reyes, owner and editor, established the bilingual newspaper in 1981 with her husband Manuel to help keep the community informed and educated.
“At the time, I was selling houses to people who came from Mexico,” she recalled. “But women who came with their husbands didn’t know where to go to install the lights or where to buy stuff. So that brought to my mind, ‘How come there are no people that can help them or tell them where to go.’ So I went to companies and they said they had information in Spanish, but didn’t know how to disseminate it to people.”
According to Reyes, one of her biggest struggles in establishing the paper was finding advertisers.
“Stores in Kansas City would tell me, ‘No, I do not have the food that your people eat or I do not sell the clothes that your people use,’ ” she said. “They didn’t understand that there was a Hispanic market and how big that market was.”
Still, Reyes invested all her savings and time into making the paper grow. But it wasn’t easy to make herself keep going, she admitted.
“Every Thursday, I would think, ‘I don’t want to do it anymore,’ ” Reyes said. “We only had one machine to write the entire paper, and we would stay until midnight working on it.”
Reyes motivated herself to keep the paper going by reminding herself that she wanted to educate people on daily issues and help Hispanics adapt to the Kansas City area.
“I went to schools and saw that teachers were using the paper to teach the kids,” she said. “Sometimes, kids would come to see us and would say, ‘I graduated because of the scholarship I saw in the paper.’… Those types of things were the things that made me happy.”
“What motivated me the most was my people,” she added. “I knew every person had a beautiful story to tell and needed to be shared. Since the beginning, I saw that people would pick up the paper and would put it under the arm and would say, ‘This is my paper.’ ”
