Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about the biggest island in Africa and the fourth biggest in the world: We are talking about the Republic of Madagascar. The island became a republic in 1992 and it has close to 24.5 million inhabitants.
Eight percent of animals that can be found in the island are endemic to this region, with lemurs being the best-known animals thanks to the animated movie “Madagascar.” The official language is Malagasy, a branch of Malay-Polynesian, and its second language is French.
Round-trip flights from Kansas to Madagascar have an average cost of $1,500 and they have at least two layovers. Ideally, get to Antananarivo, as it is the city where flights are most accessible. The easiest way to get around the whole island is in the famous taxi brousse, although you should consider that it being a collective taxi, there will be many delays in terms of the estimated time of a journey. Another option if you want to move from one end of the island to another is to hire direct flights, though they are much more expensive than the trip on the few roads of the island. The accommodation is quite economical compared to other underdeveloped countries. The lodging in a 3-star hotel has an average cost of $40 a night and in a 5-star hotel of $100 a night, although it will depend a lot on the city where you stay, but the prices will be quite affordable in any site. Madagascar’s food has a strong influence from Arabia, China, France and India, so the food is usually spicy and with a clear touch of onion and garlic flavor and accompanied by rice. Be sure to try the akoho sy voanio, which is chicken prepared with coconut and rice; the kitoza, which is fried smoked meat; for dessert, dried fruits such as tamarind, pineapple, mango, guava, coconut, among others; and finally, do not forget to try the betsa, which is a type of fermented beverage. The average cost of a full meal is $13 with dessert included.
The places you should not miss during your next visit for the beautiful island of Madagascar are the following:
*National Parks and Reserves: without a doubt these are the sites that are most worth visiting. Along the island there are 19 National Parks, 24 Special Reserves and five comprehensive Natural Reserves. If your trip was aimed at knowing the biodiversity of the island this is the best option to enjoy it in a safe way.
*Anja Community Reserve: it is the best reserve if you wish to enjoy seeing and meeting lemurs. Here you can explore different caves accompanied by dozens of wild lemurs that follow you while the guides explain the habits and behaviors of these beautiful animals.
*Andasibe-Mantadia National Park: this park is very close to Antananarivo. Due to its proximity to the city, it is one of the most visited mainly by foreigners. Here you can see a species of larger lemurs called Indri Indri.
*Ranomafana National Park: in this park you can find a very large forest full of flora and fauna. In this park lives a lemur that is only found in that region and is called Golden Bamboo Lemur. Thanks to this species, this park was declared a national park.
*Andringitra National Park: the ideal place if you like is climbing and exploring. In this beautiful park surrounded by great and beautiful mountains, you can go camping, trek, and you can climb some of those great and beautiful mountains. In this site it will be more difficult to find lemurs since there are not so many trees and places where they live, but you can also be lucky to see one or two family of these primates.
*Avenue of the Baobas: it is undoubtedly one of the most famous postcards of the island. It is one of the most famous sites that you can see in photographs of the island. This is because these types of trees are endemic to the island, and from here you can get a nice postcard with your family.
*Antananarivo: it is the capital of the island. If you have enough time to visit the capital of the island I assure you that it will be worth it, taking advantage that your international flight will surely arrive here.
The official currency of Madagascar is the Malagasy Ariary. Remember to change enough cash to the local currency since it being a poorly developed country, it will be difficult to find ATMs or places to pay by card if you want to buy in small establishments.

Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de la isla más grande de África y la cuarta más grande del mundo: nos referimos a República de Madagascar. La isla fue considerada República a partir de 1992 y cuenta con cerca de 24 millones y medio de habitantes.
El 80% de los animales que se pueden encontrar en la isla son endémicos de esta región, siendo los más conocidos por todos los lémures principalmente gracias a la película animada de “Madagascar”. El idioma oficial es el Malgache, una ramificación del malayo-polinesio, y su segundo idioma es el francés.
Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Madagascar tienen un costo promedio de $1,500 y cuentan con al menos dos escalas. Lo ideal es llegar a Antananarivo ya que es la ciudad en donde los vuelos son más accesibles. La forma más sencilla de moverse por toda la isla es en los famosos Taxi-brousse, aunque hay que considerar que al ser un taxi colectivo habrá muchos retrasos en cuanto a el tiempo estimado de un trayecto. Otra opción si deseas moverte de un extremo de la isla a otro es el contratar vuelos directos, eso si son bastante más caros que el viaje por las escasas carreteras de la isla. El hospedaje es bastante económico a comparación de otros países poco desarrollados. El hospedaje en un hotel 3 estrellas tiene un costo promedio de $40 la noche y en un hotel 5 estrellas de $100 la noche, eso si dependerá mucho de la ciudad en la que te hospedes, pero los precios de igual manera serán bastante asequibles en cualquier sitio. La comida de Madagascar tiene fuerte influencia de Arabia, China, Francia e India por lo cual los alimentos suelen ser picantes y con claros toques de sabor a cebolla y ajo y acompañados de arroz. No dejes de probar el akoho sy voanio, el cual es un pollo preparado con coco y arroz; la kitoza, la cual es carne ahumada frita; de postre las frutas secas como el tamarindo, piña, mango, guayaba, coco, entre otras; y por último no dejes de probar el betsa, el cual es un tipo de bebida fermentada. El costo promedio de una comida completa es de $13 con postre incluido.
Los sitios que no deberás perderte en tu próxima visita por la hermosa isla de Madagascar son los siguientes:
*Parques Nacionales y Reservas: sin lugar a dudas los sitios que más vale la pena visitar. A lo largo de la isla se encuentran 19 Parques Nacionales, 24 Reservas Especiales además de 5 Reservas Naturales Integrales. Si tu viaje fue encaminado a conocer la biodiversidad de la isla esta es la mejor opción para disfrutar de ella de una manera segura.
*Reserva de Anja: es la mejor reserva si lo que deseas es disfrutar de ver y conocer a los lémures. Aquí podrás explorar distintas cuevas acompañado de decenas de lémures salvajes que te van siguiendo mientras los guías te explican los hábitos y comportamientos de estos lindos animales.
*Parque Nacional Andasibe-Mantadia: este parque se encuentra muy cerca de Antananarivo. Debido a la cercanía con la ciudad es que es uno de los más visitados principalmente por los extranjeros. Aquí podrás conocer una especie de lémures más grandes llamados Indri Indri.
*Parque Nacional de Ranomafana: en este parque podrás encontrar un bosque muy grande y lleno de flora y fauna. En este parque habita un lémur que sólo se encuentra en esa región y se llama Lémur Golden Bamboo. Gracias a esta especie es que este parque se declaró como un parque nacional.
*Parque Nacional de Andringitra: el sitio ideal si lo que te gusta es escalar y explorar. En este hermoso parque rodeado de bellas y grandes montañas podrás quedarte a acampar, hacer largas caminatas o trekking y podrás escalar algunas de esas grandes y bellas montañas. En este sitio será más difícil encontrar lémures ya que no hay tantos árboles y sitios en donde vivan, pero de igual forma puedes tener la suerte de ver a una que otra familia de estos primates.
*Avenida de los Baobabs: es sin duda una de las postales más famosas de la isla. Sin lugar a dudas es uno de los sitios más famosos que podrás ver en fotografías de la isla. Esto se debe a que este tipo de árboles son endémicos de la isla, y sin lugar a dudas de aquí podrás sacar una linda postal con tu familia.
*Antananarivo: es la capital de la isla. Si tienes el tiempo suficiente para conocer la capital de la isla te aseguro que valdrá la pena, aprovechando que seguramente aquí llegará tu vuelo internacional.
La moneda oficial de Madagascar es el Ariary malgache. Recuerda cambiar el suficiente efectivo a la moneda local ya que al ser un país poco desarrollado será difícil encontrar cajeros o sitios donde pagar con tarjeta si deseas hacer comprar en pequeños establecimientos.
