Sofia Martinez- Manuel receives scholarship from KC Scholars

By Tere Siqueira

Sofia Martinez-Manuel recently received a surprise at school – a surprise that could add up to $50,000 in educational funding over the next five years.
“They told me I had a meeting with the principal,” the Olathe (Kan.) North High School junior said. “I had no idea that … (I was) going to receive … (a) scholarship. I was confused because everyone was clapping and taking pictures. Then, I saw a sign that said, ‘KC Scholars.’ ”
KC Scholars, a program that focuses on helping low- and modest-income students in parts of the Kansas City area pay for college, awarded Martinez-Manuel a traditional scholarship. The renewable award is $10,000 per year, with a five-year limit.
For Martinez-Manuel, receiving the award is part of an educational journey she has taken with her mother by her side.
“My mom has put so much work and effort into my education,” Martinez-Manuel said. “She’s originally from Guerrero, Mexico, so she can’t speak or read English very well. I remember we used to cry because I couldn’t understand my math homework.”
Martinez-Manuel said “it was amazing” seeing her mother react to the news of the scholarship.
“The scholarship took some weight off her shoulders,” the teen-ager stated. “We are going to do everything we can to put me through college, and this will help a lot.”
Martinez-Manuel, 17, plans to pursue a double-major in sociology and business at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Then, she’s hopes to enroll in a prelaw program.
Martinez-Manuel has some advice for other students who want to receive a KC Scholars traditional scholarship.
“I advise (them) to apply for the scholarship early and put all … (their) efforts into the essays,” she said. “The most important part is sharing your story in the essays, so they know why you need the scholarship.”
