For Mary Sanchez, being a journalist was always the path for her.
As young as 13, Sanchez already knew that was the career path she would follow.
“By the time I was in high school, I was already winning journalism awards,” she said.
The Kansas City, Missouri, native went on to attend Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, where she majored in journalism and secondary education. She has become a nationally syndicated columnist with the Tribune Content Agency, specializing in Latin American issues, immigration, race, politics, education and culture.
The daughter of a Mexican immigrant, Sanchez never wavered in her career path choice.
“I never questioned it,” she said. “The fact that I was that adamant about what I wanted kept me in the game. I can see that now.”
That perseverance led Sanchez to work for The Kansas City Star for more than 30 years. She had a paid internship with The Star right out of college and was one of the two students ever hired directly out of that program. Sanchez left in August 2018. Her passion for journalism led her to write for other prestigious organizations, such as The Poynter Institute and Madrid-based wire service EFE.
One thing Sanchez likes about being a journalist is having the chance to be a voice for others.
“It has afforded me the ability to have (an) impact and to be in people’s lives in ways that I wouldn’t otherwise,” she said. “It’s a real privilege to be able to have that space and voice. You better wield it well.”
Despite the many changes journalism is experiencing, Sanchez still believes in its importance to society.
“I’ve always done a lot of mentoring with younger reporters because I believe in what journalism gives to society and what society gives to journalism,” she said.
Sanchez hopes things will get better in the field, she said.
Sanchez’s advice to anyone pursuing any dreams is to be open to growth.
“Always be open to learning and growing,” she said. “People need to just be fully aware of all their background, of everything that they bring (to the table).”

Sánchez comparte clave de su éxito duradero como periodista
Para Mary Sánchez, ser una periodista siempre fue su camino.
A los 13 años, Sánchez ya sabía que ese era la carrera que seguiría.
“Cuando estaba en la secundaria, ya estaba ganando premios en periodismo”, dijo.
La nativa de Kansas City, Missouri, asistió a la Northwest Missouri State University en Maryville, donde se especializó en periodismo y educación secundaria. Se ha convertido en una columnista sindicada a nivel nacional con la Agencia de Contenido Tribune, especializada en temas latinoamericanos, inmigración, raza, política, educación y cultura.
Hija de un inmigrante mexicano, Sánchez nunca vaciló en su elección de carrera.
“Nunca lo cuestioné”, dijo. “El hecho de que era tan inflexible acerca de lo que quería me mantuvo en el juego. Puedo ver eso ahora”.
Esa perseverancia la llevó a trabajar para el The Kansas City Star durante más de 30 años. Tuvo una pasantía remunerada con The Star justo al salir de la universidad y fue una de las dos estudiantes contratadas directamente de ese programa. Sánchez se fue en agosto de 2018. Su pasión por el periodismo la llevó a escribir para otras organizaciones prestigiosas, como The Poynter Institute y el servicio de noticias EFE con sede en Madrid.
Lo que más le gusta a Sánchez sobre ser periodista es tener la oportunidad de ser una voz para los demás.
“Me ha dado la oportunidad de tener un impacto y estar en la vida de las personas de una manera que de otra manera no hubiera tenido”, dijo. “Es un verdadero privilegio poder tener ese espacio y esa voz. Hay que manejarlo bien”.
A pesar de los muchos cambios que experimenta el periodismo, Sánchez todavía cree en su importancia para la sociedad.
“Siempre he hecho muchas tutorías con reporteros más jóvenes porque creo en lo que el periodismo le da a la sociedad y lo que la sociedad le da al periodismo”, dijo.
Sánchez espera que las cosas mejoren en el campo, dijo.
El consejo de Sánchez para cualquiera que persiga algún sueño es estar abierto al crecimiento.
“Siempre esté abierto a aprender y crecer”, dijo. “La gente necesita ser plenamente consciente de todos sus antecedentes, de todo lo que traen (a la mesa)”.
