Los pasajeros y la tripulación en un cuarto vuelo aparentemente trataron de vencer a los secuestradores a bordo; y el jet se estrelló en un campo abierto de Pennsylvania. En consecuencia, nadie en la tierra resultó herido. Y el edificio del Capitolio de EE.UU., el cual se cree que era el tercer objetivo previsto de los secuestradores, se salvó. En total, los ataques terroristas cobraron 2,977 vidas. La víctima más joven tenía dos años; el más viejo, 95.

Hoy, nos enfrentamos a una amenaza aún mayor de terroristas entrenados por extremistas militantes de cosecha propia. El Estado Islámico en Irak y Siria, comúnmente conocido como ISIS o ISIL ha logrado reclutar a nativos estadounidenses, canadienses y europeos y a los inmigrantes mal asimilados de países de África y del Oriente Medio con pasaportes estadounidenses, canadienses y europeos.
Nuestro gobierno cree que hay más de 100 titulares de un pasaporte de Estados Unidos que están luchando y entrenando con ISIS y con otros grupos yihadistas militantes en el Medio Oriente que son virulentamente anti-occidentales.
¿Cuántos han regresado para llevar a cabo ataques aquí en los EE.UU.?
ISIS decapitó recientemente a dos periodistas estadounidenses y grabó en vídeo las atrocidades, las cuales publicaron en Internet. Tales atávicas y viciosas ejecuciones se están llevando a cabo en público en los bastiones de ISIS donde los militantes están entrenando a niños que han reclutado, según ABC News.
Las autoridades del Reino Unido estiman que cerca de 500 británicos están en Siria e Irak luchando junto a los grupos islamistas. La semana pasada, el primer ministro británico David Cameron anunció medidas defensivas para evitar que los sospechosos de terrorismo y los naturalizados nacidos en Gran Bretaña regresen a Gran Bretaña. Defensive measures: Where are they?
The events of Sept. 11, 2001, are seared into history and the American psyche.
That morning, 19 Islamic terrorists hijacked four U.S. commercial airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Passengers and crew members on a fourth flight apparently tried to overpower the hijackers on board, and the jet crashed in an open Pennsylvania field. Consequently, no one on the ground was hurt. And the U.S. Capitol Building, believed to be the hijackers’ third intended target, escaped harm. Altogether, the terrorist attacks claimed 2,977 lives. The youngest victim was 2 years old; the oldest, 95.
Their killers were from Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates – all foreigners.
Today, we face a greater threat from homegrown militant, extremist-trained terrorists. The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, commonly referred to as ISIS or ISIL, has recruited native-born Americans, Canadians and Europeans and poorly-assimilated immigrants from Middle Eastern and African countries who hold U.S., Canadian and European passports.
Our government believes there are more than 100 U.S. passport holders who are fighting and training with ISIS and other virulently anti-Western militant jihadist groups in the Middle East. How many have come back to carry out attacks in the United States?
ISIS recently beheaded two U.S. journalists and videotaped the atrocities, which it published online. Such vicious, atavistic executions are being carried out publicly in ISIS strongholds where the militants are training children they’ve conscripted, according to ABC News.
Authorities in the United Kingdom estimate that about 500 Britons are in Syria and Iraq fighting alongside Islamist groups. Recently, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced defensive measures to prevent naturalized and British-born terrorist suspects from returning to Britain. Cameron also raised the United Kingdom’s terror threat level to “severe,” meaning a terrorist attack is “highly likely,” and wants to confiscate passports from jihadi sympathizers and terror suspects.
In July, the self-proclaimed leader of ISIS vowed to conquer Rome. Recently, Italian newspaper Il Tempo reported that Pope Francis is a target that “ISIS has in the crosshairs.” The Italian government issued a nationwide terror alert, beefed up security around “sensitive targets” and restricted air space over Vatican City.
