El problema se ilustra en una estadística: Liberia sola necesita 27 instalaciones de tratamiento del Ébola para lograr un impacto en la lucha contra la enfermedad.
“Sólo existen seis en operación”, informó al personal noticioso reunido en las oficinas de la organización en Lenexa, Kan.
En realidad, después del anuncio de Mitchum, son siete.
Heart to Heart está intensificando sus esfuerzos en la región. El grupo estaba proporcionando suministros médicos allá, pero pronto operará una unidad de tratamiento del Ébola (ETU) en un área justo afuera de Monrovia, capital de Liberia. La unidad con 70 camas está bajo construcción.
Durante la conferencia de prensa, también anunció que la organización pronto empezaría a reclutar médicos y enfermeras para un los despliegues de seis semanas para supervisar las operaciones de la instalación. Alrededor de 200 liberianos trabajarán junto con el personal rotatorio.
“Manejar una ETU en Liberia será el esfuerzo humanitario más complejo y desafiante que hayamos realizado”, señaló. “También pudiera ser el más importante”.
En el momento de la conferencia, Mitchum reportó 3,431 personas fallecidas por el Ébola. El domingo (Oct. 12), los Centros para el Control de Enfermedades (CDC) reportaron que el número de muertos había totalizado 4,000.
CDC estima que hasta 1.4 millones de personas podrían infectarse si no se toman las medidas adecuadas.

Local group to open Ebola unit abroad
Ebola is toppling the deficient healthcare infrastructure in West Africa, Heart to Heart International CEO Jim Mitchum said during a recent press conference.
The problem is succinctly illustrated in one statistic: Liberia alone needs 27 Ebola treatment facilities to make an impact on fighting the disease.
“There are only six in operation,” Mitchum told the news personnel gathered at the organization’s headquarters in Lenexa, Kan.
Actually, after the announcement Mitchum made, make that seven.
Heart to Heart is stepping up its aid efforts in the region. The group was providing medical supplies there, but will soon operate an Ebola treatment facility in an area just outside Monrovia, Liberia’s capital. The 70-bed unit is under construction.
During the press conference, Mitchum also announced the organization would soon begin recruiting doctors and nurses for six-week deployments to supervise operations at the facility. About 200 Liberians will work alongside the rotating staff.
“Running an ETU (Ebola treatment unit) in Liberia will be the most complex and challenging and humanitarian effort we have ever undertaken,” he said. “It may also be the most important one.”
At the time of the press conference, Mitchum reported 3,431 people had died from Ebola. On Sunday (Oct. 12), the Centers for Disease (CDC) control reported the death toll had topped 4,000.
