KCK Police reported that 2 men where arrested after the attempted robbery of a convenience store near Shawnee Drive and I-635.

An off-duty Wyandotte County sheriff’s deputy was shot and critically wounded during the incident early Wednesday morning.

Police said the deputy was in the 7-Eleven at 4400 Shawnee Drive about 1 a.m. getting something to eat when he was shot by the robbers.

Authorities said he was wearing his uniform. The deputy was taken to a hospital and rushed into surgery. He was reported to be in critical condition.

The suspects fled. An abandoned vehicle was found in the Turner area.

Authorities believe the robbers are connected with other robberies around the metro, including one at 79th Street and Wornall Road in Kansas City, Missouri, where a store clerk was pistol-whipped and another person was grazed in the hand by a bullet.

A Shamrock gas station was also robbed at 85th Street and Woodland Avenue.

Police searching a wooded area near 47th Street and Metropolitan Avenue about 6:30 a.m. took at least two men into custody. Authorities were using surveillance pictures to determine if the men were connected to shooting.

Police are asking residents to stay vigilant, keeping doors locked and not warming up their cars un attended in the area.
