El primero de octubre un joven armado abrió fuego en Umpqua Community College en Oregón matando a diez personas e hiriendo a siete.
Las autoridades identificaron al protagonista del crimen como Chris Harper Mercer de 26 años, quien también murió durante el incidente. Sin embargo, las autoridades han pedido a los medios de concentrar su atención en las víctimas en lugar de Harper.
Una de las víctimas que recibió la atención de los medios fue Chris Mintz, un veterano de 30 años que trató de parar a Harper para salvar a otros. Mintz, sobrevivió a cinco disparos y ha sido reconocido por lo que dijo cuando fue disparado, “Es el cumpleaños de mi hijo” esperando compasión de parte de Harper.
Después del tiroteo, el presidente Obama enfatizo la importancia de control de armas. Masacres como la de Oregón se ha convertido en una “rutina” en Estados Unidos y debe haber un cambio, dijo.
“Mi respuesta aquí en el podio termina siendo una rutina, la conversación como consecuencia de ésta, nos hemos convertido insensible a esto,” dijo el Presidente en un discurso televisado. “Nuestros pensamientos y oraciones no son suficientes; no llenan la angustia y el dolor y rabia que deberíamos sentir – y no hace nada para prevenir esta matanza de que pase en otro lugar de Estados Unidos la próxima semana o en un par de meses.”

Ten dead, seven wounded in Oregon shooting

On Oct. 1, a gunman opened fired at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College, killing 10 people and injuring seven.
Authorities identified the shooter as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer, who also died during the incident. However, authorities have asked media outlets to concentrate their attention on the victims, instead of the shooter.
One victim receiving media attention has been Chris Mintz, a 30-year-old veteran who tried to block the gunman and save others. Mintz, who was shot five times, but survived, has been quoted in news stories as telling the gunman, “It’s my son’s birthday” in hopes of inspiring compassion in the shooter.
After the shooting, President Obama emphasized the importance of gun control. Massacres such as the one in Oregon have become a “routine” in the United States and changes need to be made, he said.
“My response here at this podium ends up being routine, the conversation in the aftermath of it. We’ve become numb to this,” the president said during a televised speech. “Our thoughts and prayers are not enough. It does not capture the heartache and grief and anger that we should feel – and it does nothing to prevent this carnage from being inflicted someplace else in America next week or a couple (of) months from now.”
