Luis Lorenzo Vargas fue exonerado recientemente después de pasar 16 años en prisión. Convicto en 1999 por presuntamente violar a 3 mujeres, Vargas fue exonerado después de un examen de ADN demostró que él no fue el violador que las autoridades estaban buscando.
Un juez cambió la condena después de que California Innocence Project (Proyecto Inocencia de California) en Los Angeles organizó un movimiento para que liberaran a Vargas.
Vargas fue acusado de ser el “Violador de la Lágrima”, un criminal que ha violado a 39 mujeres. De acuerdo con varios reportes de noticias, Vargas fue arrestado por que él tenía el mismo tatuaje como el verdadero violador. De acuerdo con el FBI, el Violador de la Lágrima” – que se piensa sigue en libertad – tiene un tatuaje de una lágrima debajo del ojo izquierdo.
Cuando Vargas se enteró de la decisión del juez, inmediatamente empezó a llorar. La abogada Raquel Cohen del California Innocence Project fue citada por el periódico The Independent: “Pienso que necesita soltar cualquier amargura y que esté contento de seguir adelante y reunirse con su familia -ojalá que sea antes de Navidad”.

Luis Lorenzo Vargas was exonerated recently after spending 16 years in jail.
Convicted in 1999 for allegedly raping three women, Vargas was exonerated after a DNA testing demonstrated he wasn’t the rapist authorities were pursuing. A judge reversed the conviction after the California Innocence Project in Los Angeles organized a movement to have Vargas released.
Vargas was accused of being the “Teardrop Rapist,” a criminal who has raped 39 women. According to several news reports, Vargas was arrested because he had the same tattoo as the “Teardrop Rapist.” According to the FBI, the “Teardrop Rapist” – who’s believed to still be at large – has a teardrop tattoo under his left eye.
When Vargas learned of the judge’s decision, he immediately started crying. Attorney Raquel Cohen of the California Innocence Project was quoted by The Independent newspaper as saying: “I think he’s let go of any bitterness and he’s just happy to move forward and be reunited with his family – hopefully, before Christmas.”
Vargas was a permanent U.S. resident, but lost his immigration status. After being released from prison, he was transferred to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services facilities to take care of his immigration status.
